Hello all,
I have the older phpBB version installed right now but am looking into installing the new one. I think it might be a bit too much hassle for me right now but I'm still thinking about it.
What are the advantages of this new version of phpBB if I was to upgrade to it. Is it really worth the update? Right now I have quite a few mods on my current phpBB and a template as well.

It's actually a critical update.A lot of sites have gotten hacked already... it's not going to get better as more people learn how to exploit unpatched sites.

Coon, you could actually install it and re-install your mods and template, yes this might be a bit of hassle... but wouldn't someone hacking your site first be more hassle?

Though if I understand correctly, you can make a simple code change describled here: http://www.lunarforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21765and that will take care of the security issue without requiring an upgrade. I made that change immediately, and then upgraded later when I had more time.

Yes, listen to Garvey. I made those code changes as soon as they came out, but my board was still hacked later.

I finally got it done. Amazed myself even that it all worked. I downloaded the changed files and between their instructions and Johnny's tutorial I got it done.
The amazing thing was that my spell check mod was not removed with the change. I only lost the Quick Reply mod. The files for Quick Reply were still there, I just had to reapply the updates to three files to get it back again.
What is NEVER emphasized enough is to keep a list of the mods that you have installed. I know when you put them in you think you are all done, but then an update comes along and suddenly you have to re-apply the mods you put in.
What had really complicated my upgrade was the attempt to get a backup of all the existing phpbb files. I had to get an ftp client and learn how to use it to download a backup before I could do the upgrade. Since I use FP for the bulk of my site, I didn't have any FTP software before.
Gonna celebrate with an industrial strength valium tonight. My nerves are shot!

Coon, not that it looks like your about at the moment, but if you want, i could give you a hand this weekend? if you still have all your mods and stuff, we could install the new PHPBB in a different directory, connecting it to the same database, add all your mods and your theme, when we're sure it works, change the name to the one of your old directory change the URL's in the admin section, then go ahead and delete your old forum. let me know
