I want to do a site for a friend that he can update himself...so I'm playing with WordPress and Joomla.

Seems like either will be what I want.  Frankly, I don't see the real difference between CMS and Blog.

With the goal being to make the site updateable by my friend, which would you recommend?

Thanks!

It depends on what he plans to do with it. A blog is great for creating both static pages and pages that will be updated with new content while archiving the old. I personally find Wordpress very powerful and much more than just a blog. A CMS also makes it easy to update content, add new content and components like stores, etc. I think a blog is easier to learn but a CMS is even more powerful. So what does he want to do with it?

Hi RickJ,

To add what Katrina said. With WordPress, there are a fairly large number of plugin/addins that make it pretty versatile and capable of doing much more than what you would think a blog could be used for.

It depends on what he plans to do with it. ...So what does he want to do with it?

It's a hunting website...so I want to be able to have him add links to equipment affiliates, stories, tips and tricks, photos, etc.

...so a "basic" website in a lot of ways but one that he can update himself.

After playing with WordPress and Joomla 1.5 all night last night, I'm thinking that I like Wordpress' interface better.

...frankly, though, I'm not seeing any big differences between the two...

I've tried Joomla, Drupal, PHPWebsite, etc. and I always wind up with Wordpress to do just about everything. I find it *much* easier to keep up to date, and the plugins available are extensive.

Thanks, all.  I'm going with WordPress.  I'm loving it more and more with every new feature I check out.

I'll quickly toss my backing behind WordPress too.  Thumbs Up

I'm loving it!

I'm seeing the "website from scratch" idea becoming antiquated due to the wonders of the likes of Wordpress, Joomla, Facebook, and so many other user friendly interfaces.
