I am getting ready to upgrade my Coppermine installation to version 1.3.3 but at the same time I want to move to a new database. This is my thought on how to accomplish this,
1. Export coppermine tables from existing database. Can I use the defaults? Do I need to select "Add DROP TABLE" or "Add IF NOT EXISTS"? 2. Paste the output from above into a SQL window of the new database this importing coppermine tables into new database.
3. Edit existing config.inc.php to change the database name/user/password
4. Run the standard Coppermine upgrade (i.e. delete everything except include/config.inc.php file, anycontent.php file, and "albums" directoy; upload new coppermine files (excluding those not deleted); run update.php)
Does that sound about right?
Also, in general, should the update.php file be removed after the update?

I might be wrong, but I would upgrade first and then move to the new database, after making sure that the upgrade worked out okay.
If it is a new database, you don't have to worry about those table settings. Those are for situations where you would have conflicting tables, etc.
I don't know how big your gallery is, and I don't know the limitation of the paste function in terms of how much data the OS can hold in the "clipboard". You might want to play it safe and save the data as a file. Then when importing, select the file, rather than paste the data into the input box.
There is no harm in having the update.php file remain.

Yeah... probably better not to try doing two things at once. If I update and then move, I assume the steps in order of 4, 1, 2, 3 would work then? I guess I'll just try it. Doing the update and then the move makes it less risky, (I hope), since if I don't get coppermine to work with the new database, the old one should still work fine. Okay... thinking out loud to try and clarify things in my mind... once the update is complete and I have the tables copied into a new database, I should be able to run coppermine off either database simply by changing the config.inc.php file, right? I hope so, since that's where I'm headed

yup, you explained well why it's good to upgrade then move. Yes, you can switch between the databases by changing config.inc.php

All went well... absolutely painless Now phpbb and coppermine are on one database, and that frees up one database that I can use as a test db.. Thanks again...

You're welcome. I'm glad it turned out well. Now you can bridge coppermine and phpbb...

Except we're trying to get him to convert to SMF...so let's encourage bridging SMF & Coppermine first to see how easy that would be

LOL... all in due time. I have SMF installed on my laptop and am working to customize a theme. I expect to at least have a test installation of SMF on-line fairly soon...and once that is working I'll cut over from phpbb to smf

maybe ronmsf2 secrelty prefers phpbb And I'm willing to accept that. I don't understand it, but I'll accept it. That's why I was writing early on the assumption that ronmsf was sticking with phpbb.
