Hi Stephanie. I went into cPanel this morning to get a message board and I see in both places, ("Bulletin Board" and "Fantastico"), the version to download is, 2.0.11. In your post you advise us that the lastest secure version is, 2.8.2 r6. How do I get the latest version?

I have one other question and keep in mind I am a relative newbie. I want to call it...

http://mysite.com/forums

what do I put after "/forums", if anything?

Thanks,

Tony.  Confused

I believe the 2.8.2r6 is referring to the release of fantastico, a 3rd party product integrated into cPanel. The latest version of phpBB (which is the most secure and recommended) is v2.0.11.

Hope this helps clarify things...

That is correct, 2.8.2r6 refers to the version of Fantastico.

Anyway the fantastico version is currently 2.8.4 r2
It has an option to update your phpBB version to 2.0.13 also all new fantastico phpBB installs are 2.0.13

If you use Fantastico to update to 2.0.13, will you use the posts?

Will you lose any theme information? (there seemed to be a warning when I chose the option to update using Fantastico, so I cancelled out)

I have a custom theme, and some simple modifications applied to my forums.

Should I try to manually update instead of using Fantastico?

If you can do it manually, that would be the ideal way. The phpbb dev team does not support issues caused by Fantastico installs.

Please ensure you backup your entire site using the Backup area in cPanel and clicking on the "Generate/Download a Full Backup" link there prior to doing anything on your account such as this.  The full backup contains both the mysql folder with your database and the folders where the forum would be located.  This way you ensure you can restore the copy if anything goes wrong.

Yep, if you use the fantastico update then your custom themes and hacks will most likely be hosed.
At the very least, the new changed files will not recognise any added lines or scripts in your custom files.
Be prepared to re install them if you use this option.
Database should be ok, but again as Dani advised it's always prudent to back everything up before doing anything.

Hi,

The fantastico scripts are regularly updated so we should hopefully receive the new scripts on the next update.
For further info with regards to fantastico you can check in their forums at:

Yes, right now the Fantastico version we are upgrading to this week will only include 2.0.14 as it doesn't have 2.0.15 for phpBB.  You can see also what it comes with script-wise for the newest release on this page - http://netenberg.com/fantastico_scripts.php

We do wish that this most recent Fantastico release would include phpBB 2.0.15, but unfortunately it does not currently.

Hmmm... since the title of this thread is no longer accurate, should be unstickied to prevent further confusion? Just a thought...
