I am so sick of PhpBB!!
What should I be going for now? I want something which I can convert to, taking my usernames and messages with me (probably)
I need one which is easy to upgrade. phpbb really annoys me!
I also need one which has a file attachment facility by default (not an add-on)
It also has to be simple and not use up too much screen space.
Is SMF the way forward really? Help!

SMF r0x0rs. I removed phpbb from my site, too. I don't use it much to justify keeping it updated. I've heard it's really easy to convert from phpbb to smf. I'll do that once I finish redoing my guestbook since I can't use Advanced Guestbook anymore.

Yep, SMF would be the one in my opinion. Here are some links to get you converted from phpBB to SMF if you decide to use it: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/readme_convert.htmlThe themes to choose from thread: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=15620.0A site with a listing of all the themes using links: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=15620.0Bloc, the best theme-maker for SMF in my opinion, site: www.bloczone.net (you can see his various themes using the dropdown on the bottom right) My forum that uses his Simplicity theme at www.anythingeverything.org and I've added a FlashChat to it, a MemberMap today (took less than 5 minutes to add the Location mod using their package manager), and a spoiler tag mod. Quick Reply is part of the forum, and you simply need to enable it on by default when you setup the board. Upgrades are easy as they do them via the package manager in the admin area, and alert you whenever the component you are running (mod or forum) is out of date and needs upgraded. Administration is easy, upgrading is easy, adding mods is easy, the forum looks good, and the themes are great. What more can you ask for? If you do decide on SMF, just let me know any questions you might have. I'm learning quite a bit about it as I go along and manage my own forum using it.

I'm annoyed with the script kiddies that published those exploits in the first place. Hopefully those nice chaps at phpBB have it under control now.

Yeah, it's the hackers, script kiddies (and spammers) who spoil the fun of the internet.

I chickened out I installed SMF, had a look around, couldn't be bothered moving everything across, then editing the theme to make it look like how it was before, so then went back and upgraded PhpBB. Hopefully these last few security upgrades have fixed everything. I feel safer in a way, because if I am running the most popular script, there will be loads of people trying to break it, and loads of people working on the fixes! If I use a new forum, it won't be targetted as much generally, but that means that some security flaws will take a long time to be discovered. It's still annoying but nevermind

The team making SMF were the ones who made YaBBSE ported from YaBB, then converted YaBBSE to SMF a couple years ago, so I am not sure I would call it a new forum actually. The stats between phpBB forum and SMF forum are the following phpBB 03 Jul 2001 1398505 articles 171847 registered users In total there are 354 users online :: 56 Registered, 6 Hidden and 292 Guests
SMF 2003-07-23 Total Topics: 26790 Total Posts: 217564 Total Members: 13593 Users Online 173 Guests, 59 Users = 232 Considering it is 2 years later for SMF than phpBB, those stats are not a small group of users. They also show that SMF has been around for almost 2 years since its creation. Again, it actually pre-dates phpBB if you consider the YaBBSE timeline since the same people involved with YaBBSE transitioned to the SMF team. These are experienced forum creators that know what they are doing. They converted it over to SMF, and have used that experience to their benefit. They do know about exploits and that is why they made the easy-to-use package manager where they alert you about security risks in the admin area and provide the option to upgrade there without a big hassle. Let's hope phpBB adds this type of capability to their forum at some point. For a comparison, Php-Nuke is one of the most popular CMS, but Mambo is the one concerned about security and the better choice between the 2. I compare SMF to it on the forum forefront. Being the most popular does not make your product the safest or the best (Firefox, Linux, Apache, all can be made as comparisons to respective, more popular products). I understand not wanting to port over to another board when you are used to one type. I only pointed out the above so that anyone who might want to consider SMF does not think it is a new forum that hasn't been around long enough to know how to handle exploits or security. SMF does and it has. Good luck with the upgraded phpBB that no more exploits are found in the next couple days again.

As admin, it's hard to go from smf to phpbb. smf just has much better functions for moderating the boards. I feel crippled sometimes using phpbb.

SMF did look nice, but I wanted a quick fix.
Unfortunately, I bet that in the future I will be kicking myself and wondering why I didn't just go for it and use SMF.
I can't win!

My own installation of smf is offline for development purposes to test bridging it with coppermine. Coppermine support forum uses SMF, and that was where I got my first exposure to it. When I have time I'll convert my phpbb forum to SMF and put it online. That is low on my priority list since my forum wasn't being used anyway

Let us know when you put it online. It would be nice to see. After seeing Dani's site and hearing all she has to say about SMF, I'm toying with the idea of converting at some point. It sounds like you also are very impressed with SMF. BTW... I really like what you have done with your Coppermine gallery... very nice

I thought Lunarpages recommends Phpbb because it's not resource intensive.
