I just installed a fresh copy of Gallery 3.0.4 and when I go to the page, I see:

Code:
Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, <redacted> and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

I've confirmed that I am accessing the proper URL by placing both a simple index.html there and also a simple PHP file to run the phpinfo() command - both work.  I've even altered the index.php that is the starting point for Gallery to immediately exit with an message and I have confirmed that the message displays, so I know index.php is indeed being run.

Can anyone help me?  Or at least point me to an error log so I can try to understand what's going wrong?

There are many things that can trigger a 500 (Internal Server) Error. I have a list at www.catskilltech.com/freeSW/SMF/faqs/index.html#err500 that should get you started.

Did this gallery add or change an .htaccess file? Maybe it botched the edit, or added settings to .htaccess that belong in php.ini. The next most likely cause is that files were corrupted by transfer in the wrong mode, or editing added blank lines at the beginning or end of file(s).

This is in install straight out of Softaculous, so I would assume it would work.  Also, I did this fresh install after my prior installation of Gallery stopped working.  Gallery had been working 2 months ago, but at some point this summer it stopped working, perhaps after the PHP 5.3 upgrade.  (Gallery is 5.3 compatible, so that should not be the problem.)

Thank you for the checklist, MrPhil - I went through your list and checked the various files, but I found nothing wrong.

If you are able to run a simple PHP script (phpinfo), it sounds like .htaccess and php.ini are probably OK. That would leave either a problem in your index.php script (or something it includes/requires), or the PHP upgrade itself is botched. If you look around the PHP board, you'll see some complaints about PHP upgrade problems. In the meantime, you can double check that your index.php and everything it includes/requires have no blank lines at beginning and end, and were file transferred in the proper mode. Also look for error_log files and other error log entries around the site and control panel.
