I have been told by Lunarpages that my account is using up too much php processing on the server. I am trying to solve this issue, but I don't know if I'm having much luck. I had two phpbb boards on my account, so I removed one that seemed to have more of a load than the other one. I'm still being told I still have a heavy php load.
From looking at other phpbb boards, it seems like the other one isn't as large as many popular ones I've seen out there. Here are my stats:
Number of posts: 20947 Posts per day: 218.95 Number of topics: 719 Topics per day: 7.52 Number of users: 1628 Users per day: 17.02
I have a ton of inactive users that I'm planning on purging soon. The only mod I have installed is the gender one.
The only other php scripts I have on my website are a postnuke site (that averages about 500 page views a day (on a heavy day).
Thoughts? I was under the impression that my site isn't really all that traffic intensive, but maybe it is?

Do you have mods/hacks? Heh - I was editing my post as you posted this. Just the gender MOD. I did have MX installed but I removed that.

Here's more info: In total there are 50 users online :: 1 Registered, 0 Hidden and 49 Guests [ Administrator ] [ Moderator ] Most users ever online was 71 on Mon Apr 18, 2005 5:52 am
OK, now this seems to be strange and a high number of visitors, especially it being this morning at 6am EST. Most of my visitors are from the US.

Are both phpBB forums up-to-date versions (2.0.14)? If they are 2.0.11 or earlier especially, they are very likely to be exploited/hacked and increase load in that manner. One of them appears to be 2.0.11 - http://www.talesfrombandcamp.com/phpbb2/index.phpThe other appears to not be showing/up, so I cannot be certain.

The other one has been removed. I plan on upgrading to 2.014 very soon, but frankly, I don't want to go to all the work if I'm just going to have to delete the board, which is what brought me to start this thread. Has there been a documented case where an exploit would increase php serverload? That is really the crux of the issue.

Yes, many many instances, sometimes into the 99.9% cpu top process ranges.

It will stop it as they should no longer have access to the security holes that they used to attack the site provided you remove any files into your account they might have uploaded there (typically best done by backing up your database and removing your forum folders themselves entirely, then uploading the new phpBB forum folders and reinstalling it to tie into your database, although you will want to look at the phpBB site for instructions to ensure how to do everything). Also, you should check your raw access logs to see any hacking attempts (guess you already noted you would be doing this though), which would be done usually via very long url strings hitting the forum.

I just took a quick look at the logs and I don't see anything. I'll upgrade later on to 2.014 to see if that makes a difference.
But... to my main point - assuming I have no hack attempts - are my board and other website considered "large?" I am trying to get a handle on what Lunarpages considers excessive.

My phpbb: Number of posts: 170643 Posts per day: 423.08 Number of topics: 9739 Topics per day: 24.15 Number of users: 2968 Users per day: 7.36 I have never received a message from LP saying I've used too many server resources. If you are using an older version of phpbb you may be the receving end of a phpbb worm. The highest count I had for logged on users was 50 and that was during the worm attacks a few months ago. Fourty nine anonymous users is very unusual.

AHA - it seems that the majority of my "guests" are a googlebot (I have adsense running). Has anyone else had this cause excessive php resource usage?
I've upgraded to 2.014 BTW.
