Hi,

New to the forums and hoping I'm in the right place to ask this question. I'm on the basic plan and mostly use my space for personal e-mail. I've been interested in trying out a program called ownCloud (http://ownCloud.org). I've been  looking at the installation instructions and it sounds like it's in php and doesn't require any special permissions. However, I didn't want to try the install if  LP didn't allow it or if it was an issue on a shared server. I've searched a bit and I've seen some older posts about ownCloud at LP, but I can't confirm if an install is even possible.

Does anyone have any experience installing ownCloud at LP?
Does it require dedicated server space or can it be run in a shared environment?

It's not that big of a deal to me to get this up and going so if an install is super complicated, I'll just pass. I just thought it might be interesting to try and have some cloud storage that was independent.

Any other suggestions/advise would be appreciated.

Thanks!

HI old_guy and welcome to the Lunarpages Forums.

Please note that ownCloud is not supported on any of our shared hosting plans (such as the Starter, Basic and Business plans). This is because that application provides a location-independent storage area for data and not necessarily your website files.

While the servers could handle running ownCloud, using it on the shared servers is actually violation to our shared server policy. Kindly note that, unlimited website storage shall be of files related to the functionality of your website only. Please refer to Acceptable Use Policy - Section 12: http://www.lunarpages.com/legal/acceptable-use-policy

You cannot use your webspace to store backups or any unrelated data. So, you cannot use this app in a shared server. If you need to use this application you will have to upgrade to a scalable cloud or dedicated server.
