what's wrong Pete? Don't you think that everyone will immediately be rushing to update and that all updates will happen without any problems?

SMF has a package manager in the admin area that you can auto-upgrade to the newest version there.  Took me 30 seconds and didn't lose a single mod/theme or anything last time I upgraded it from 1.0.2 to 1.0.3 Smile

Here is a link to the easy to do phpBB to SMF converter - http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php?converters Wink

LOL, yeah I have to agree with Dani, that SMF is soooo easy to upgrade. Click of a link (literally)!  Thumbs Up  Smile

Unfortunately, I have 4 boards running phpBB. The updates aren't really so bad themselves...just wish they weren't so frequent.

I haven't been able to recover my forum since this last upgrade.  Of course the upgrade by itself probably would not be much of a problem, but I took the opportunity to try implementing a few other changes, and haven't been able to recover since.  The story goes kind of like this...

1. remove old phpbb files
2. export database (except the few Garvey's tutorial said not to)
3. delete old database
4. create new database with a more generic name
5. install latest phpbb (in a different directory... why I did this I'll never know Confused)
6. remove from database tables previously exported
7. import saved table data
8. forum doesn't work...  there seem to be three contributing problems..
   a.  changed directory
   b.  second theme apart from subsilver
   c.  mod to allow users to select theme of choice
 .
 .
 .
 .
1,000,000.  Have tried a million different things.

Seems like it should be an easy fix.  Sometimes things look promising, and then everything falls apart.

/me begins to wonder if I should try porting over to SMF... but wonder if I can do that without a working forum in phpbb.../

Do you have a backup of the database you did prior to the upgrade as well? If so, you can certainly convert to SMF if that is what you want to do, otherwise you can still get it working again as phpBB.

I think so.  All the tables are there, and they look okay when I browse them with phpmyadmin.  I think I may have been a mistake not exporting the theme related tables.  I thought I would be able re-add the themes later, but because of mod (I think) the user tables have information on what theme to use, so things are out of synch.  I've tried numerous methods of trying to get things re-synch'd but nothing has worked.  I'll get one problem fixed, only to create a different problem.

I have a backup of all my data, so my next attempt will be to delete all tables except the config table, and the import everything accept config from my backup.  Sounds straight forward, but so did all my other attempts to fix the problem  Sad

Ron, could you send me a copy of the backup itself so I can test converting it to SMF on my test board to see the process (even if you don't decide to do it, this will give me an estimate if anyone else does have issues and decide to convert how long/complicated it would be)?

Ron, here's what I would do if I were you ...

You should setup a new folder for the SMF forum. You can use your same database (no need to install a second database), because each forum (SMF and phpbb) will have their own prefixes.

When I first was trying to decide which forum script to use for my Dad's Electrical Engineering forum, I setup 3 forums:

http://domain.com/smforum/
http://domain.com/phpbbforum/
http://domain.com/punbbforum/

I had them all running at the same time to test which I liked best. Once I made my decision, I deleted the folders of the others I didn't need anymore, and deleted the corresponding files from the database (since they each had their own prefix, it was easy and no probs).

You might want to do the same to get SMF setup while you're trying to get your phpbb working again.
