I received an e-mail from LP stateing my board will be taken down if I did not upgrade to the latest version. I called tech support this morning and asked if I could please be given until tonight to impliment any upgrades. The tech said he would give a note to the other tech asking the same for me. I guess LP doesnt feel that they want to trust me that I will make the changes because right away LP took my board down!!

I have also noticed that the upgrade button is not available in Fantastico. What gives???   Confused

Is this what LP calls good customer service? How am I suppose to upgrade my board without being able to use fantastico?? Manual?? I dont think so. I have a large board with several MODS. Manualy upgradeing is not as easy as LP tries to make it seem. I have seen the walkthrough.

Then LP says that for $75.00 I can have LP techs manualy upgrade for me. So I pay over $500.00 a year for my hosting, LP takes away the capablity to auto upgrade and then expects customers to figure it out on their own or pay more money!! Now I am forced to deal with a down board and several hundred people in my community that will be flooding my inbox with the what gives questions.

When is this going to be fixed??

This is less than unexceptable customer service from LP.

WHEN IS THIS GOING TO BE FIXED!!!???

Fantastico has not been upgraded to install the latest release of phpbb yet. That is probably why it was taken down. Upgrading from there was not getting the latest release of phpbb. In this instance, a manual install of the upgrade is a necessity.

I am not privy to all of the logic behind LP's decision to curtail boards that have not been updated, but the notice of the release of 2.0.15 version of phpbb is over two weeks old. The email notice that LP sent out was at least a week ago.  Part of the problem that LP is attempting to manage is the number of people who do not upgrade when a new release comes out, and their vulnerable copies of the script put the servers at risk of being compromised.

There are folks here on the forum that can help you with a manual upgrade. Keep a list of all of the modifications that you have for your board so that they can be reinstalled, if necessary. I've had to reinstall my quick reply mod with the last two releases, but my spell check was not affected by the upgrades.

There is a very good tutorial on how to do the upgrade here in this forum. And, again, lots of help available if you need it.

Most likly there was a little confusion on the phone. The PHPBB option in Fantastico was removed because the Fantastico version is not up to date, so even if you upgrade, your board would still be out of date. Plus Fantastico would remove any mods you had anyways. You can find someone here on the boards who would be willing to do it for free or a few techs whom have free time would do it for free. The 75 dollar price seems more like the backup price to restore a site, though Max could have added somethign without telling us again, lol. You can also switch your board to something like SMF which has an auto-update function to it (switching your board to SMF is pretty easy to do with several conversion tools out to help you switch).

If you wanted to switch to SMF, I have a FAQ on installing it and converting to it:

http://helpdesk.lunarpages.com/faq.php?do=article&articleid=349

It takes about 15 minutes to install SMF and then convert phpBB to SMF actually.  After that, SMF will allow you to auto upgrade in the admin panel using package manager rather than manually updating any longer.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this yet or not, but the disabling of phpBB installs is being handled by an automated script. As a result, it's probably a coincidence that it happened when it did. Actually, I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner since I think that email came out a few days ago and shortly after that is when they began running the script to disable older versions...

Hi people,

Yes it is an automated script which will be run serverwide over the coming week. we are running it on a few servers a day until we can clear the backlog of old phpBB boards.
These are causing havoc with compromised accounts causing issues for everyone on the server.

The script will not suspend the account or disable/alter any files, it merely removes access to the affected folder by browsers until such a time as the board is upgraded or removed.

As soon as the new phpBB version is available in fantastico we will re-enable it.
