Here's the skinny:  Site is empty except for phplist, which I have installed but not used.  It worked fine.

I installed phpWCMS through Fantastico.  After finishing installation, everthing on the site now gives me a 500 error.  The phplist doesn't work anymore, and even readme files and gif images won't work.

I noticed that the php files were set to 644.  Shouldn't the permissions be 755?  I changed them to 755 and it didn't help (which took forever one by one in file manager).  .htaccess was also 644, and I tried changing it to 755 as well.

What confuses me is that NOTHING, even non-executable files work.  Everything gives me a 500 error.

I'm an old school HTML guy who has experience in cgi stuff, but this php is all new to me.

As a side note, I'm trying to find a good CMS.  I've tried all of them in Fantastico and haven't found a good one yet.  Mambo was good, but WAY more than we need and too confusing.  phpwebsite was ok but I couldn't get it to save the layouts and templates.  What I need is a nice GUI to update web pages and add content.  The talk about modules and catagories and whatnot gives me headaches.  And I don't understand why the CMS's all assume you want your site visitors to login?  The only user account features (besides admin stuff) will be a forum.

I'm on the magellan server if that helps.

Site is http://www.timothymethodist.org

Thank you for your help!

I suspected there was an error log file, but I couldn't find it earlier.  Too many icons in the control panel (maybe my eyes were crossing after spending hours working on the site?)!  Here's the log entry:

[Sun Feb 20 19:03:08 2005] [alert] [client 206.255.174.71] /home/(username removed)/public_html/.htaccess: Invalid command 'php_flag', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration

That seems logical.  I knew that php file permissions wouldn't screw up everything on the site.  But I don't know much about the .htaccess file.  The only thing I've done with it was using it to add a password-protected page years ago on another site.

So what is this "php_flag" and how do I fix it?

I also assume that the php files should be 755 and not 644, as they were installed.  Maybe this is an error in Fantastico?  As far as permissions, ther are several files related to phpWCMS that are new to me, and I don't know what they should be.  Remember, I'm a newbie when it comes to php!

I hope I like phpWCMS when/if I get it working!  Like I said, I didn't like the other CMS options.  I need something SIMPLE and user friendly, but will create a professional looking site that doesn't look like a template created in MS Publisher (Haha).  Basically something to easily edit news and multimedia links.  Most of the site's content will be static.  The only dynamic content will be newletter items, regular video/audio postings, photo viewer, forum, and maybe pdf links to our Sunday church bulletins (for example).  I plan on using phpList for mailings and maybe phpBB if the forum in phpWCMS isn't good enough for our needs.

OK, I posted too soon!  I found the problem:

I took out the following lines in .htaccess:

php_flag magic_quotes_gpc Off
php_flag register_globals Off

At least this solution will be here in the forum for others to enjoy!
