Hi there I'm a new lunarpages customer (I'm migrating my site from another host) and have successfully installed phpbb using Fantastico. I have tried using the "restore" admin feature with a "backup" file I created using my original phpbb (which is still live at the other host). I tried uploading the backup file (which is 18Mb) using this dialog: After I click on Start restore, the progress bar in the browser status window takes about 12 minutes to get to the 'complete' stage. Then I get the following error: So any ideas? Is it a version number issue? (backup is from 2.0.4 and restore is to 2.0.11) Is my file too large? Why is this stuff rarely simple/smooth Thanks in advance - Michael

you should upgrade your older version first, otherwise you could end up with errors all over the place, also, instead of using the restore function in phpbb which isn't very good, you should go to phpmyadmin (if your old host had it) and export your database, then go to phpmyadmin at lunarpages, and execute your database back.
here is a guide on how to restore from a hacked forum, but in your case you should be downloading the tables from your old host, and uploading them to lunarpages.
hope this helps.

Do you mean that if I use phpmyadmin at my old host to export the db and then import it here at lunarpages with phpmyadmin I could get errors b/c the version numbers are different? (or do you mean that the bb at my old host might have probs b/c the version itself is no good - i.e. nothing to do with migration...) I am trying to leave my old host asap and don't want to update my phpbb there if it's not necessary. For a non-tech newbie(ish) like me that kind of thing is v intimidating.

Hi muddyoval, If you don't change phpBB version to 2.0.11, please note that you are at very high risk of getting hacked due to the exploits in prior versions: http://www.google.com/search?q=phpbb+exploits95,400 returns, a lot are due to the Santy worm ( http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/santy_a.shtml ) and to the highlight exploit. Good luck not having that happen to your site (one of my sites was hacked several months ago via the highlight exploit, so I know firsthand how that can happen, thankfully I upgraded and so it didn't get attacked by the Santy worm)

OK so I read and followed Garvey's "Instructions For Hacked PHPBB Forums" so I could see how to use phpmyadmin to export the db from my existing phpbb (still live at another host) and import that data here at lunar also using phpmyadmin. These instructions are very clear - thank you Garvey. (Note I skipped the step where you delete the old forum db because I am migrating the db to lunar and will not close the live bb until I have perfected this test migration). Unfortunately the process did not work for me... The problems happen towards the end of the sequence when I'm in phpMyAdmin @ Lunar trying to use the MySQL data that I got out of my original phpbb. Here are my export choices from phpMyAdmin at my old host (I think an older version with less choices than shown in Garvey's how-to): Here is a shot of the MySQL data that came out of phpMyAdmin (I pasted it into Notepad): When I try to paste the data into the window shown below (which is the lunar version of phpMyAdmin) my browser eventually hangs after a long timeout - can I really paste 12mb of data into a browser window? (I never get to push the Go button) I also tried saving the MySQL dump as a file and then uploading the file using this dialogue: When I try to upload the MySQL-Dump file I get the error below. Note I tried this with and without gzipped compression (which gets the file down to 1.6Mb) and I get the same error. So... Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks Michael

Danielle- I'm already on that version... my stuff is up to date. The problem is that when I go to my new PHPBB installation and select 'restore' it appears to upload for a long time, then says 'no file uploaded.' My database is between 10 and 15 megs. I tried an old copy of a backup that's less than 1 meg and it worked, so it appears to just not like the larger copy of the same database. I'll try again tonight- it's possible the last backup I had was bad I suppose. Hope that's it... Hi muddyoval,
If you don't change phpBB version to 2.0.11, please note that you are at very high risk of getting hacked due to the exploits in prior versions:

it may be the file being extra large, you could upload it to your server, and ask support@lunarpages.com if they would mind doing it for you

To use the restore function, it pops up a window to browse to the file- on the local machine instead of the server. Not sure I could restore the database from a file on the server. Or maybe I could... I dunno. I'll tinker with it tonight. The old server I'm leaving doesn't have any kind of database management stuff on it to use to export the tables etc so I kinda have to rely on the backup/restore functions.

Is there any way I can do it myself - i.e. use the dialog below to point to a file I have uploaded to my space at lunar (instead of my C drive or whatever). Do I need to map my space at lunar as some kind of network drive so this dialog can see it? (can that be done?) Also I'm surprised that a 12Mb uncompressed phpbb file (1.6Mb gzipped) is considered "extra large"? On another point – it would seem that migrating sites from other hosts to Lunar is a good source of business for Lunar (as opposed to new clients who create sites from scratch at Lunar). My fear of a headache with phpbb migration is one reason I have been putting off leaving my old host for over a year. If this had looked easy I would have migrated to Lunar a year ago. Muddyoval (also in this thread) is having the exact same problem as me. Are we the only ones? I will ask the support staff at Lunar if they can help with this issue.

hey if lunar can'tdo your site for you, send me a PM on sunday (both of you), with your username/password/URL (everything really) for your old host, and your new host, and i will do the migrations for you.
although if you had all the forum files downloaded from your old server and upto your new server ready, that would be cool.

Make sure you back up your files from your old host to your PC, and then upload them to LP. Once downloaded to your PC, you can zip it, and then upload it, use the extraction tool in c-panel/filemanager to extract the archive. Also, when upgrading your fourms, I strongly recommend backing up your database, but do not delete it. Than, delete all files in your phpBB directory, or what ever you have named it, except for your config.php file. Do not delete it. Than upload all of the new files and dirctories to the directory your phpBB forum is located on the server, with the exception of the config.php. Remember you didn't delete the old one, so you certainly don't want to upload the new, empty on. The old one contains all of your data base information. Now all you have to do is run the update file, which is: /install/update_to_2011.php . This is what updates your phpBB tables. If there were no need for the data base to be updated, there wouldn't be an update file that you must run.

Use the phpmyadmin feature, split your .sql file into several smaller ones, than upload them and restore.

Use the phpmyadmin feature, split your .sql file into several smaller ones, than upload them and restore. Even if I restore each table on its own I still get the following error when restoring just the phpbb_searsch_wordmatch file (for example) which is only 660kb gzipped: For somewhat of a newbie like me this is all very complex. Scripts like Fantastico are great but they end up creating people like me: I have an active phpbb board that I created with one click of my mouse but I have zero knowledge of MySQL and so migration is a disaster when things don't go as they should. Thanks for the various help people have suggested. At least I have phpMyAdmin at my old host (where the bb is still active) to get the data out - muddyoval does not even have that to work with.
