it is definitely getting to be a little irritating... thankfully one of my forums is converted to smf... still leaves one that needs to be upgraded though, (or converted I guess).

Looks like I may end up removing one of my boards a bit early.

Well, phpBB has done a decent job of getting the updates out quickly, before it wreaks too much havoc. The problem is upgrading, however all the recent upgrades have been minor, and very few changes made to very few files. One thing to keep in mind, like MS, phpBB is probably the largest distributed forum out, and therefore is the most sought after for finding vulnerabilities. IMO, once SMF gains more popularity, you will see vulnerabilities found in it as well. I'm in no way knocking SMF. I plan on installing it myself. BTW, I have updated the tutorial for manually upgrading phpBB, which can be found here: http://www.lunarforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=16952

yes... to phpbb's credit, updates are release quickly. I would much prefer that than to have a hacked site. It's not the updates themselves that get irritating, but the process of updating a site. I haven't had to do that with smf yet, but I've heard it is easier than phpbb. Updating phpbb isn't really all that difficult, but rumor has it that smf updates are essentially just a push of a button. We'll have to see when the time comes. And the even bigger test for smf in my mind is whether or not they will be on top of updates required to fix vulnerabilities. I'm keeping my fingers crossed

Don't get me wrong, I love the quality of phpbb it's ju sthat I hate having to do these manual upgrades every few months. Granted with a modded board it's a fact of life but I can dream can't I?

I don't have a problem with the software either, just that my board hardly gets any traffic and don't want to bother updating something all the time that hardly gets any traffic.

Upgrading phpBB and upgrading SMF are entirely different. I've upgraded both and done upgrades for people doing both, and phpBB upgrades are longer, manual and a pain. I lost all of my modifications one time when I upgraded my phpBB forum I used to have.
SMF, on the other hand, takes about 30 seconds to upgrade. I have Simplicity theme (the most highly modified SMF there out there b/c so many things were changed from the default) along with mods and lost 0 of them with 2 upgrades since January.
Even as SMF becomes more popular, the very fact you can easily upgrade makes it more secure. This is because the biggest insecurity of a forum is people not upgrading for months even years after exploits are found. With SMF, there is simply no reason not to upgrade right away.

yeah, its true, i said in another thread that when SMF gets bigger hacks will be found, but the easy upgrade/mod feature makes it easier, maybe phpbb should make something similar

I feel some deja vu here! I just upgraded, luckily I don't have any mods so it was easy this time.
I feel very practised at it now!

I upgraded again last night. Luckily I still had my notes from re-applying my mods the last time, so I managed to get that done fairly quickly too. Each time I have to modify php code though, it is an adventure. Hold your breath and pray I don't mess anything up too badly!
