I am trying to get my BB ready for prime time. I have activated "User email via board" because I want encourage the users (members of a HS reunion class) to email each other directly rather than expose their addresses to webcrawlers.

So far the board is limited to me (Admin) and one test user. Admin can see email buttons in messages and profiles, but test user cannot. The user sees profile and PM buttons only in messages and no email button in the profile.

This feature isn't subject to specific permission, nor does the phpBB user guide say anything about enabling or disabling it for individual users or user types -- only for the board as a whole

According to the phpBB site FAQ, hosts sometimes put limitations on BB user email to prevent abuse. Is that what's happening here, or did I miss something in the configuration process?

Test user probabley can't see the e-mail button because in the admin or test profile it says Do not always show my e-mail address. Set that to yes, and you can see it.

Thanks, Lupus; that was it.

It's kind of counterintuitive -- I set this to No because always showing the email address was exactly what I was trying to avoid. I didn't realize that, if I didn't want the board to always show email addresses, I should tell it to always show them. Silly me.

(Seriously, I wish that the phpBB guide, which I did read carefully, declared explicitly that enabling user email from within the board causes addresses to be hidden. It does say that they will be displayed if you don't enable this feature, but that isn't quite the same thing.)
