I just installed WordPress 2.7.1 on my site.  Now it's telling me I have to upgrade to version 2.8.4.  I tried to use the automatic upgrade and it's telling me:

Upgrade WordPress

Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/wordpress-2.8.4.zip

Download failed.: Could not create Temporary file

Installation Failed

Does anyone have an idea why this would happen?

Would I have to have the file permissions set to allow writing to the folder?

Try setting the permissions for the wp-content folder to 755 and see if you are still having issues.

How would I set permissions with a number?

For wp-content, all I see are check boxes; Owner, Group and Public all have r, w, x checked.

However, that folder is in the WordPress folder.  Would I have to have the permissions all checked there, too?

Thanks.

While you're banging around inside wp-content, delete the Upgrade folder. That's the one that needs to have 755 permissions.

755 is rwxr-xr-x

A misplaced dash in there- it should be rwx-rx-rx   or, IOW, check r.w.x in owner, r.w in group and public.

Good catch. Last time I'll cut and paste from a Wiki.  Yep

My wp-content folder doesn't have an Upgrade folder.

One thing that bothers me is the installation path.  I used the installation script provided by Lunar Pages and it put the WordPress folder in /public_html.  Will the automatic upgrade know enough to look in there for the WordPress folder?

Nope, location doesn't matter.  Were you able to change (and only change) the wp-content folder's permissions to 755?

You used Fantastico to do the original installation?
