I'm new to WordPress and php, so I might be making a simple error.
I add: define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);
 to the wp-config.php file using notepad. I upload it to a working WordPress installation in the root of my site. I replace the file on the site. Refresh my browser, site is now dead.
Tried 4 different text editors and 2 different ftp clients.
What am I missing?

Installed WP thru Fantastico, and upgraded to 3.1.2

Hello,

The issue might be related to the encoding of the file or to some additional text that is being added by your text editor. I personally recommend NotePad++ for such things and as FTP client Total Commander or FileZilla. Try to FTP using the FTP client and see the code inside the wp-config uploaded on the server.

Regarding the network I suggest you check this link : http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network

If nothing above works you should email support for additional help on troubleshooting this  Hiya
