It's not only the exploitability that was a factor, it was the resource usage it can consume.

It tends to be heavy on resources and can in some cases cause major stability issues from what we have experienced.

Yea, unfortunately many people don't know how to tweak their ipb's or vbulletin's :/

if i had to take sides, i probably would say its better for LP to not allow the large forum pkgs. personally, back in the day when IPB still had a free version [now its 15 day free trial] i got it so streamlined it was about 20% less server load then phpbb. I had cut a bunch out of it, but still liked it over phpbb because of its better search abilites and INCLUDED sub-form possibilites.

How does this pertain to original post? Big forum boards requres big forum pay  Neutral  If you are willing to hack up the phpbb quite a bit, then I'd recommend doing that. Otherwise, you could possibly go w/ a CMS and use their included boards. If you need any help with either issue feal free to let me know. [sorry about capitilization and lack there of...i wish they never existed.  Thumbs Up ]

bah, i got hit by the typo fairy :/

EDIT: to test the differences between my IPB and my phpbb2/ directories I had created 25 forums inside 1 forum [the main forum]. Then I created "Blah simple text" and copy and pasted it inside each forum. Then from there I had a 5 posting of the same thing with "Blah post1, Blah post2" etc. So I had a pretty doctored-approach to make sure my boards were on the line and on par.

So, yes it is possible to get ipb's and vbulletin's stripped down...it's just that no one takes the time, and sometimes its NOT good to do because it more then likely will interfere with any mod you may want in the future.

why dont you actually test out YaBB 2? It is totally rewritten and see how much better it runs. YaBB2 was designed to get rid of the stability problems that were found in YaBB, it opens about 20% of the amount of files needed in YaBB SP1

There is no way that LP can test every script that a user wants to use to see what happens. If you want them to reconsider the issue, you might try email feedback@lunarpages.com to get it on their radar... and as time permits (they've been more than a little busy with the nameserver issues lately) they will have a group of senior admins discuss and evalaute the issue...
