I have just upgraded my account from shared hosting to VPS.  In the e-mail I received, it says:

Quote
We have already installed and configured nameservers on your new VPS machine, but it is your responsibility to ensure that your nameservers are registered properly. In order to use your nameservers, you must register ns1.(mydomain.com) with (IP address) at your registrar. This is not the same as updating the nameservers for your domain. Once your nameservers are registered you may update your domains listed nameservers to point to your own.

Can someone tell me how to do this?  I don't understand it at all.  My registrar lists the domains I own, and they all say "points to" ns1.lunarservers.com.  I understand I have to change that, but what is this other thing I need to do first?

Also, I have some other add-on domains on my account.  Do I have to do this for all of them, or just the main domain?

Sorry this is such a noob question, but I am new to VPS hosting and I never really understood about DNS anyway.  Sad

At my registrar (NameCheap.com) I had to use an advanced feature called "Nameserver Registration"

I then setup ns1.mydomain.com (and ns2.mydomain.com) to point to my VPS IP Address.

Then I changed the ns1.lunarservers.com to ns1.mydomain.com in the DNS setup.

...and ns2.lunarservers.com to ns2.mydomain.com

Then, with ns1.mydomain.com registered and pointing to your VPS, you can setup the DNS for your other domains by simply pointing them to :

ns1.mydomain.com
ns2.mydomain.com

Thank you!  That helped a lot.  2 of my domains are with Network Solutions, and I found the right place to create nameservers under "Manage Nameservers".

In the DNS setup for each domain, it requires 2 nameservers, but Lunarpages only gave me info to set up ns1.mydomain.com.  What do I use for the second one?  Do I leave that as ns2.lunarservers.com?  Or can I create another nameserver ns2.mydomain.com with the same ip as the first?

Thanks for your help.

Yes.
"...create another nameserver ns2.mydomain.com with the same ip as the first."

ns2.lunarservers.com is no longer any use to you. (unless you keep your shared account running)

Thank you so much - I know it was a simple question, but sometimes it's the little stuff that trips you up the most.

I got the two nameservers created, changed the DNS record, and everything seems to be working fine.  Thanks again!

Hi couture57,

I am glad to hear you were able to sort this out. Just in case somebody else checks this thread for the same question, there is a very informative topic on a near board about why and how to register private nameservers which is supposed for dedicated and VPS customers:
