Hello,

I have a Xen VPS with Lunarpages, and i was wondering if it's possible to add more hostnames to my site. I understand (Correct me if i'm wrong), that by using more hostnames it will be possible to increase the parallel downloads (Images, HTTP requests, etc), so it would take less time to load my pages.
I also saw the option of using my current hostname + CDN provider to optimize my site too, but i would prefer the first option, since i would save the CDN money, which isn't very cheap.

Thanks!

Hello,

Host names for servers are just how the a server refers to it self, so adding additional host names will not improve load times, or increase parallel downloads.  The scan you ran (I am guessing Y!Slow for firefox) refers to having multiple servers setup to server your site's content.   If you want to increase your parallel downloads for your one server, you have a few options at your disposal, including increasing your max allowed clients in your apache configuration (a word of warning, this can consume lots of memory) or using a reverse proxy (like nginx) on your VPS to serve the static files, and make the connections to apache.

CDN are ultimately the best when serving images and files that don't change to a large number of customers globally, but typically aren't required by most customers.

I hope that sheds a little on the scan you ran, and how you can improve performance with out having spend a lot of money.

Hello,

Thank you very much for the previous answer. I have opted for the CDN and am currently trying to configure it, however it asks me to create a CNAME record for my domain like: CDN.mydomain.com, pointing to cdn.mydomain.cdnwebsite.com

How can i do that? I'm using the Lunar Pages control panel.

Thanks!

Hello,

To do that, you would need to ssh into your server, as LPCP does not have a DNS editor inside of it.  The DNS files are located at /var/named/domain.com

If you have questions about how to ssh please see - http://www.lunarforums.com/dedicated_web_hosting_at_lunarpages/how_to_login_to_your_dedicated_server_via_ssh-t26372.0.html
