I just got my VPS and though I still don't understand half of it, I'm getting used to it.
Problems I currently have are:
- My pictures won't load.
- My forum won't load
- phpMyadmin isn't installed
- I'm still not sure if Managed hosting is active
- Nameservers
I have a ticket running but replies are slow and in the coming weekend I probably won't get a single answer. Here's the ticket if a staff person likes to help: 6437-OSHC-2001

About the nameservers, I got an e-mail from Lunarpages:
-------
We have already installed and configured nameservers on your new VPS machine, but it is your responsibility to ensure that your nameservers are registered properly. In order to use your nameservers, you must register ns1.snootysims.com with 74.50.5.205 at your registrar. This is not the same as updating the nameservers for your domain. Once your nameservers are registered you may update your domains listed nameservers to point to your own.

If you are using a cPanel/WHM server, you may visit the following post on Lunarforums for assistance. Steps four and further are already completed for you.
http://www.lunarforums.com/forum/index.php?topic=26132.0
-----
The questions I have:
- Updating nameservers for my domain; How and Where do I do that?
- Update my domains listed nameservers to point to my own; Hmm, what? ?
- Who is my registrar? Lunarpages registered my domain name when I first came here 3 years ago.
- If I know that, how, where and with who do I change it?
- If I manage to change it, will my site, which is currently still running from a shared server THEN be run from the VPS server? I hope not since I still have lots of problems with it.

You know, if this VPS was a bit easier for non-technical people (like me), it would have been much more popular and would give you lots more customers for it.
It's just crazy that I had dozens of question BEFORE I took the VPS and now I have it, I have even more. It really must get easier.

Hello,

I see in your ticket you are getting some of your questions addressed here answered - I would continue to work with them on the technical things that your fellow forum members can't really help too much with.

Yes, you should be able to manage your domains (if they were registered through us) at:

http://manage.opensrs.net

Hope that helps some.  Any other issues should be able to be covered by our support team via the ticket you have going on right now.

Yes, but as I wrote, the answers are coming at an insanely slow pace. My last entry was over 14 hours ago. How am I supposed to get this going? It's almost weekend so hopefully I get 1 more response and then I probably get nothing for 2 days. Deep sigh...

You’ll need to register your private name servers at your registrar. (If registered thru us then would be Tucows and http://manage.opensrs.net/) Then they can be used for all the domains you’d like to be pointed to VPS. To assist our clients with name server registration, we produced a tutorial available at http://www.lunarforums.com/forum/index.php?topic=27720.0

Once you point your domains to your VPS and move the sites files over to it then they would no longer run from the shared server.

I am sorry for any delays in getting the answers you need from your support ticket. Please remember not to reply until you hear from a tech as that bumps it to the bottom of the queue again.

More info found here in case you havent seen it already : https://desk.lunarpages.com/faq.php?categoryid=29

I hope this helps,

Ok thanks. I just got a reply to my ticket. Well the PHPmyadmin works only there's still the problem of the pictures not loading and also my forum loads from the Shared server.
I replied that to the ticket so I'll wait patiently for their reply.

About the nameservers;
So if I understand correctly; If I do the nameserver change, then the site automatically will load from the VPS right?
If that's so, I need to wait with doing that because of those unresolved matters.

Hey Snooty,

Glad to hear you got a reply on your support ticket and they are helping you out.

Yes when your nameservers are pointing to the VPS and propagation is complete, then the domain would resolve to the sites files there and not the shared server. Hopefully the support techs can get your issues sorted soon and you can get that done.

I hope this helps.

I still like to know if anyone can help me with the pictures not loading. I don't think support understands my question.

If you view my site in previewmode you see this: https://74.50.5.205:8443/sitepreview/http/snootysims.com/

Now if I rightclick a picture and choose "view image", I get this:
Quote
Forbidden
You do not have permission to access this document.
And if I right click the picture in View File in Plesk, it says the file doesn't exist... Confused
Re-uploading the pic doesn't help.

How do I fix this?
Edit: Never mind, it's fixed. I renamed the htacces thingy to htaccess.bak and all the pics show up now.

2 Questions:
I managed to register the VPS with my domain, (ns1.snootysims.com at 74.50.5.205) but I have 2 other domains on that same VPS. Do I need to register those too?
For example I have a fansite about someone, named will-wright.com. Do I need to register ns1.will-wright.com at that IP adress or is it really only needed for the primary domain snootysims.com?

Also, now I have registered my domain, when will I need to update the nameservers (ns1.lunarpages to ns1.snootysims)? Right now or after a few days?

You can use one nameserver for all of your domains, if you set the nameserver up to point those domains at the right IP.

( e.g. lots of domains are using the nameserver ns1.lunarpages.com )

so at the registrar you'd set up will-wright.com to use the nameserver ns1.snootysims.com, and the nameserver to point will-wright.com at your VPS.

Thanks. You know, this sounds oh so complicated but I found it's not really that difficult now I'm working with it.
Got 2 more questions:

From Lunarpages I got this in my welcome mail:
Quote
In order to use your nameservers, you must register ns1.snootysims.com with 74.50.5.205 at your registrar.
I did that but don't I have to register ns2.snootysims.com as well?

Also at the register site I read this:
Quote
Before adding additional name servers to your configuration, you should be sure that the name server has setup correctly. 24 - 48 hours after you submit a request for an additional name server, it will be in the rotation
How do I know if the name server has set up correctly?

If you are using MS Windows, go to command console, type:

nslookup your_domain_name.com x.x.x.x

If your name server is working you should get something like below:
Server:  your_domain_name.com
Address:  x.x.x.x

Name:    your_domain_name.com
Address:  x.x.x.x

(x.x.x.x = your DNS's IP)

Ok thanks. 2 of my 3 sites show up (including the main site snootysims.com), but not will-wright.com. I will wait a bit and else I will do that later.

1 more question, if I change the dns (ns1.lunarpages.com to ns1.snootysims.com) am I done? Or do I need to change some things in Plesk? I saw a DNS icon there and not sure if I need to do something with it.

After you set your own nameservers for your domain, your site will start pulling up from your VPS, no changes are needed if that was what you wanted Wink.

DNS icon in Plesk is used to mange DNS records in domain's zone.
