Responsive Design (was: Value of backlinks to SEO)
« on: August 29, 2014, 07:57:48 PM »
Hi there! Quick question that's totally off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My site looks weird when viewing from my apple iphone. I'm trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to correct this problem. If you have any recommendations, please share. Cheers! -

Do research on "responsive design". If this is a home-grown application, or a heavily modified canned application, it will be up to you. If it's an off-the-shelf canned application, you may be lucky and find a plug-in/modification/add-on/theme that does the job. If not, do it yourself.

Responsive design senses the browser in use (user agent), or even better, the available screen size in pixels, orientation, and capabilities such as a touchscreen. It uses that information to decide on the fly what the screen layout and behavior should be. It's often done with a combination of Javascript and CSS, although once this information is determined, it can be sent back to the server so that subsequent pages can be better generated, tailored to the device.

(This was apparently originally intended as a spam post [thus, @Pete's edit], but it's still a good general question that it would be useful to answer. I will change the subject line in the original post.)

Responsive Web design is the approach that suggests that design and development should respond to the userís behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. This would eliminate the need for a different design and development phase for each new gadget on the market.

Regarding this, is this also open source? I was looking to spend minimally.

Responsive Design is a technique, not a product. If your base product used to create a site is proprietary ($), then you'll probably have to pay for RD. If the product is open source, RD will likely be free. If you wrote your site yourself, you'll have to implement RD yourself (the cost is your time).
