Responsive Web design challenges Web designers to adapt a new mindset to their design and coding processes. Responsive web design is an approach to web design in which a site is crafted to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling.

Just google "responsive design" and you'll find lots of discussion. Mostly it involves some advanced (CCS3) CSS work to select different settings for different screen sizes. There are other ways to do it, but that seems to be pretty common.

Add 5/16/2016: Be sure to take a look at "Bootstrap". It is a CSS and JavaScript library that makes it fairly simple to set up a responsive page, runnable on anything from a smartphone to a huge desktop system.

Responsive website is the kind of website which is mobile friendly and for all hand hold devices like, smart phones, tablets etc. Now in 2014 responsive website is very important because more than half of the total traffic of different search engines is coming from hand hold devices like mobile phones etc. What if your website is not mobile friendly? definitely visitors will not visit your website and you can loose business. Therefore a responsive website is necessary for successful business.

Responsive web design is that design where web developers can create sites that are viewable across all platforms - mobile, desktop, tablets etc. without the need of developing different codes for different platforms. Responsive designs adapt to different screen sizes automatically thereby rendering optimal user experience.

Responsive website design should be the first requirement for any website owner because it's one of the best strategies to create an adaptive design. So, your website gets more traffic from desktop users as well as mobile or tablet users. In easy words, responsive website is viewable across all devices like mobile, tablets, desktop etc.

Note that responsive web design is different from adaptive web design! Don't confuse the two -- they're not interchangeable terms. Responsive basically sends all your materials over, and lets CSS and JS on the browser sort out which things to use. Adaptive basically has the server asking the browser what it supports (screen dimensions, control devices, etc.) and then just sends out pages customized to those capabilities.

Adaptive would have to send an update to the server if display dimensions (window size, mobile device orientation) changes. You could have a hybrid system where the first page to a browser is responsive, the browser sends back information about its capabilities, and subsequent pages in the session are adaptive (customized to the device). I haven't seen such a setup, but it should be possible.

You're right MrPhil, as adaptive is useful for retrofitting an existing site to make it mobile friendly and allows to control the design & development for specific viewports, that's why I have mentioned here.

Responsive Web design is the approach that suggests that design and development should respond to the user's behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. The factors like resize, hide, shrink, enlarge, or move the content to make it look good on any screen should be done by website by identifying the application context user is at. Responsive web design adapts to different screen sizes automatically thereby rendering optimal user experience. This makes your web design more intuitive and dynamic.
