Can't reach nona.lunarservers.com
« on: May 23, 2017, 11:28:26 AM »
I started to see this a few days ago where getting email would time out or not connect altogether for large parts of the day. During these time I can't even get a ping.

Trace route from home shows the following last hops to get to nona:

Code: [Select]
10  be2061.ccr21.jfk05.atlas.cogentco.com (154.54.3.70)  18.647 ms be2060.ccr21.jf
11  xo.jfk05.atlas.cogentco.com (154.54.11.190)  25.287 ms  25.646 ms  26.443 ms

If I do the same traceroute from work, the last bunch of hops looks like this:

 23    91 ms    89 ms    88 ms  haw-66-102-128-6.haw.lunarpages.net [66.102.128.6]
 24    88 ms    89 ms    86 ms  nona.lunarservers.com [74.50.21.31]

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I'm kind of at a loss..

If you could not get to LP consistently from a given IP address, I would suggest that you recently made so many accesses in a short time that you got blacklisted as a probable Denial of Service attacker. In that case, you would open a support ticket and explain the situation and give the IP address you need cleared. However, if it's only intermittent, it doesn't sound like that's what happened. I presume that "at work" and "at home" are two different IP addresses. Are they served by different ISPs?

After some more diagnosis by ssh'ing into the router and pinging from there I was getting something like 50% of packets dropping. Which has dropped to 2% over the last hour and now down to 0%.

I'm going to monitor it for a bit and power cycle the router, and I'll post back here at the end of the day tomorrow to give a full day of monitoring before I consider it fixed.

But any advice on linux tools/commands to diagnose issues like this would be appreciated. Just using ping/tracepath/dig/netstat at the moment, and after it died before the last router hop I didn't really know what to do next..

Thanks,
Scott

oh and "work" and "home" are different IPs and networks entirely.

Been seeing odd packet loss that comes and goes, still trying to track down the issue using mtr, but things are manageable at least.. Thanks for the help, man do I hate network issues..

Yeah, problems that are not reproducible on demand are always a royal pain to track down. Looking again at your network traces, I see that in both cases you were getting into the LP sphere of operations, so it's puzzling that one origin would drop a bunch of packets while the other wouldn't, and yet the dropped packet origin is still getting that far. All I can guess is that something with your home Internet connection (ISP) is noisy or bad, and dropping lots of packets (or was). Consumer-grade modems may not be the best -- are you DSL, cable, or something else? If DSL, have you checked that phone filters are working properly, and your phone line isn't noisy (mine crackles loudly in wet weather)? If cable, do dropped packets correspond to likely time of day heavy demand on the cable system (e.g., evening prime time)? I'm not a network guy, so I can't offer any more than that. Can your ISP offer any diagnostic tools or other help? Good luck!
