Title: How do I get started?
Post by: MarkThomas on August 29, 2017, 08:49:21 AM
I am totally new at this and would like an example to change my new web page from "Welcome to Lunarpages Web Hosting" to say "site under construction"  All I know is I need the first page to be an index.  Can someone give me two text files with HTML for the index page and the Site Under Construction page.

I know this is stupid, and I have a wife who says she will help me but never finds time.  I am a C algorithm developer by trade, but HTML and web pages are all new to me.  Will someone help?  I just need the first two files to have an example to get started, and then I can move forward.

You only need one file.

index.html:
Code: [Select]
<html>
<head>
<title>SITE NAME under construction</title>
</head>
<body>
<p>This site is under construction. Check back soon!</p>
</body>
</html>

Typically, your real page will be in PHP, and thus index.php. The .html will be found before .php, and hide the .php page. When the .php page is ready, erase or rename index.html and the index.php page will be seen by all.

Thanks! That works fine. I have successfully created an index web page (the basic "under construction" page you suggested), and have tested it locally to make sure it looks okay.

But... I'm on a windows box, and can't get any ftp programs (or browser-based ftp) to connect to the remote site so I can transfer the html file to my public directory.

As I understand it, the ftp program needs to be configured as "active mode" because I'm on windows. I've settled on filezilla as my ftp app, have limited the ports, and am using the filezilla's external IP address generator. Filezilla establishes a connection, but something's wrong. (The password, as I typed it, is right.)

I get this:

Status:   Resolving address of lemereenterprises.com
Status:   Connecting to 216.227.214.96:21...
Status:   Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Status:   Initializing TLS...
Status:   Verifying certificate...
Status:   TLS connection established.
Command:   USER lemer0
Response:   331 User lemer0 OK. Password required
Command:   PASS ************
Response:   530 Login authentication failed
Error:   Critical error: Could not connect to server

Thanks!!

It doesn't like the password you gave it, for some reason. It's been so long, I don't remember which password you set up that FileZilla wants in this case. I think there are several passwords you need to worry about -- your overall LP account, one for signing on to the control panel (I think that's the one you want here), and possibly a separate FTP password. Or, you mistyped the password the first time, and it thinks the right password is the wrong one. Open a support ticket if you can't figure out which one.

If it may take a while to figure out how to FTP files up and down, sign on with your control panel (cPanel or LPCP) and directly type in the file there, in the file manager's editor. It's not as convenient as FTP, but it will get you going.

I bought the cheap package and have no cPanel, and so I have to do everything the hard way.  My wife is helping me but she is totally frustrated too.  The password is my LP account password and i typed it in again to make sure it was right and the same thing happened.

I have a friend who uses LP, and was the one who told me about it, so I will ask him to help me.  I have been at this for 7 hours  now, and am frustrated and burned out, and need to go do something else.

Thanks so much for your help.  I opened a ticket.

Hi MrPhil,
I got a response from my ticket already.  It turns out my account password and my FTP password that came in an email were the same to begin with.  I changed my account password, but my FTP password is still the original one they gave me on start up.  When I use that with FileZilla it all works fine.

Thanks for your time.  I'm impressed my ticket was acted on so quickly.  I am starting to like LP, instead of being totally frustrated.

Sounds good. You're up and running!

No control panel at all? Which hosting package? I thought all of them had some sort of control panel. The old servers still have cPanel, and for a number of years now, every new server is LPCP (LP's homebrew). Your welcome email should have told you how to get to your control panel (on mine [cPanel], https://<server>.lunarpages.com:2083).

Hi MrPhil,
The plan I got is called Starter Hosting, and cPanel is not part of the plan.  My welcome email says:

Control Panel and FTP Login Information

This gives information on how to access and maintain your account. We highly recommend changing your password periodically to maintain security.

Domain: lemereenterprises.com
Username: redacted
Password: redacted
Server: XI.lunariffic.com
Mail Server: lpmail01.lunariffic.com
Database Server: lpsql01.lunariffic.com

None of that looks like a control panel to me.  I think the plan I got is for people who really know what they are doing, and just supplies the basics.  I got it because it was the cheapest, and I wanted to learn how to do web pages.

What does the control panel do, anyway?

I found a button on my account page that says "Control Panel".  When I go there there it is called Server Management Portal and there are a bunch of things I can do like look at my email account.  That is how I found the web mail I am using.  I did not have to log into it using the FTP password.  It just opened from my account.

I can log into /xi.lunariffic.com:20082 with my user name and FTP password.  There is a lot of stuff there I dont really understand.  Is that what you mean.  Sorry I am so stupid about all of this.

BTW, I like your avatar.  I have cats and volunteer at Animal Care and Control here in San Francisco as a cat socializer.

Yes, that sounds like the Control Panel that you found. My guess is that it would be LPCP (LunarPages Control Panel). It will have stuff like setting up your email, a file manager (to upload/download/edit/view files), access logs and error reports, a place to install canned applications, etc. If you look around, either from the control panel or the lunarpages.com wiki, you'll probably find some instructions on using it.

She's my sweetheart. I adopted her at approximately 3 years of age, and she's been with me for over 14 years now. She's not very social with other cats, though.

Yes, that sounds like what I found.  In the next most expensive plan you pay $2 / month for cPanel, whatever that is.  It must be a more comprehensive version of LPCP, or maybe you have to pay because it is obsolete.

We adopted our previous cat at age 3 and had him for 14 years before he succumbed to cancer.  We got two more a month later to cope with the grief.  I use his picture for my avatar at another technical forum, and would like to use it here if I can figure out how to do it.  He didn't like other cats in his territory, but he didn't dislike the cats themselves.  I brought one home on foster that was going to be euthanized at the shelter because he bit too many people, and my old guy got along with him, but they started a peeing contest in the room I had been isolating the foster, which was a no go for me.  I got the foster a place in a sanctuary and he was eventually adopted by someone.  My wife was afraid of him because he attacked her.  He was a super smart cat, but someone had played rough with him as a kitten, I think, and he thought hands were toys.  I shed a lot of blood fostering him.  Anyway, I am going to look to see how to add an avatar.

Ahh, I see I will have to figure out how to put a picture on my website and then connect to it via my URL.  It will take e a little while.  No rush.

Thank you, MrPhil, for all your help and encouragement.

Profile > Forum Profile > point to your site's image (I don't think they let you upload one to the Lunarforums site).

Hi MrPhil,
I put it in my public_html directory, although it is not on my web page, except in private.  As you can see, it worked.

My friend who told me about LP is impressed with the web page builder that comes with his account.  Unfortunately, the cheapest version that I bought does not include the builder, so I will have to find a free one out there, or just continue writing HTML in a .txt file.

I am really impressed with LP.  My service ticket got acted on within minutes, and I am talking to a Senior Moderator, who is helping me a lot.  Once I got past my stupidity about the account and FTP passwords being different, using the site has been really easy.  My wife was in on the original research that created the web, and was well known amongst people like Tim Berners Lee and the like, so she helps me too, but it usually devolves into an argument with me defending a position I know nothing about that she is expert in.  LP has been really fun, and I am learning.  I always think the day I learn something new is a good day.

Thanks so much for your help, MrPhil.

I'm surprised that there's no page editor. Is this on a Linux or Windows server? Maybe Page Mason (LP's home-brew editor, if it's still around) or Weebly (a commercial editor that LP has to pay for) only work on Linux, or not having to pay for Weebly might make the Starter plan a bit cheaper. There are free builders out there -- no need to pay for Dreamweaver etc. I never use a builder -- I write PHP to produce my pages -- so I really haven't kept up on what LP offers. Once you get into serious websites (non-static content), you won't be writing HTML pages. Don't forget to look at Softaculous or whatever it's called for canned applications like blogs, stores, etc. unless you're really determined to write your own.

cPanel (which is on my server) is commercial control panel software, so LP has to pay for it. They wrote their own version, called LP Control Panel (LPCP) a few years ago, and although I don't use it, I understand it has comparable features to cPanel. Since it's free to LP, they put it on all the new servers. The old ones are still cPanel -- I have no idea if they intend to switch us to LPCP at some point.

Have lots of fun, and good luck! Say "meow" to kitty.

I am a Windows man, although I used to do code development in a Unix environment.  I know most people hate Windows and call it bloatware, but it tries to be all things for all people, and I really like Visual Studio for development.

I looked up PHP, and I guess I will integrate that into my HTML learning.  Thanks for the tip.

I think Weebly is available for Windows types.  It is what comes with the more expensive packages.  I think the cheapie package I got is perfect for me.  It will force me to do a lot of stuff the hard way, and I will learn more that way.

Lumpy would say "Meow" back, but his ashes are in a little wooden box on the fireplace mantel, and he only talks to me.  My wife saw him sitting in a chair for a couple of weeks after he passed, and I heard him clicking around the house in the same period, but I never saw him.  I was trained in physics, and it used to be my religion, but now I dont disbelieve a lot of things I used to be so sure about.  Probably not a topic allowed here.

What is your girl's name.  Are those eyes real, or have they been Photoshopped?

I found the 3rd party scripts page, which seems to have lots of different things, and I found Softaculous, that has a lot more.

Thanks again for your help.  I am so glad you decided to respond to my first post.  You have a wealth of knowledge, and like cats too.
