Title: Redirect all urls ending with .swf
Post by: Pixel51 on February 12, 2018, 04:29:02 PM
Years ago Pixel51.com had a lot of flash video, but now it has none.  Google, however, keeps attempting to crawl them and on search console I get lists of crawl errors.  Is it possible to redirect all urls that end in .swf to a particular page?  Perhaps via .hta access?  Or is there another way to convince Google that the pages no longer exist?

From the search console, you should be able to tell Google to "forget" certain URLs. I think it's referred to as something like "manual operations". I don't know if it can accept wildcards like *.swf, or if you have to spell out each item.

Be sure to double check whether you have pages that still point to these files, or an old sitemap around that still lists them. Check the backlinks to see if perhaps some external site(s) are still pointing to your .swf files. If they are, I'm not sure what the best recourse would be if the owner doesn't remove those links. They're already failing with a hard 404, so redirecting them to some other page might not be useful (and might even incur penalties for duplicate content).

I have several old files on my site (actually, old defective links) that Google keeps complaining that it gets crawl errors on, yet I can't find anything that still points to them. If nothing else works, you might be able to filter the error report to exclude all the .swf stuff and let you concentrate on real errors.
