Should I downgrade or cancel?
« on: June 27, 2017, 11:05:37 PM »
I believe right now I have the Windows hosting ($9.95/mo) and have been considering just getting rid of my website. I haven't updated it in 6 months or more, and I use it to link to a couple ebooks on Amazon that haven't sold very well. So from a business point of view it's a bad idea that just isn't selling, or worth the money, or cost of even hosting a website. There's no ROI.

But as a hobbyist website it's got years of work that I've uploaded, both jpg images of doodles, and silly stories I wrote while bored.

I'm thinking I do like the junk even though it's a financial mess, and doesn't even earn enough money from ads to pay for website costs and maintenance. Any savvy investor would just see it as a waste of time and abandon it.

I typically pay a lump sum for the year, but was going to go month-2-month. I was thinking maybe just downgrade instead of cancel since at some point in the last decade I was very active using the site. Will I lose anything by downgrading to basic or starter hosting? I have 3 email addresses, use mysql, php and the obvious (html, css, javascript, etc). I have filezilla so don't really need Cpanel for anything, not sure if it's included in those packages.

Supposed to expire 6/28 not sure if that means immediately, or towards the end of the day or if it's backed up for a week or two then just destroyed into nothingness. Thanks.

Lunarpages only offers (AFAIK) yearly plans, not month-to-month. You would have to switch providers to get m2m, and then you would likely pay considerably more per month than with a yearly plan.

Basic, or even Starter, hosting could work for you. Do you run software that actually needs Windows/Microsoft services such as .Net or Access DB? If not, paying for a Windows server is a massive waste of money. Depending on how your site code is set up, you may have to adjust file paths, etc. to move from Windows to Linux hosting.

A new Linux-based account will probably get LPCP with it (LP's own cPanel-like control panel), else cPanel (on older servers). You will need it for certain tasks that an FTP client can't handle.

Lots of people keep sites as hobbies, and don't earn a return on them. If you have a sufficiently high readership, you might be able to break even with something like Google AdWords.

Actually,
I already have basic, but the prices are misleading. $4.95 is the price for 5 years of hosting not 12 months. I just went with the 3-mo package.
