Hi, these are probably very basic type questions, however, they are what's holding me back from making the move to Lunar pages or in fact any other kinds of "really real" host lol

I have an msn community, all of the pages were created using their webpage editor (yes I do now know that it's a "trap" lol) I have successfully found a way to back up my site including all the pages and graphics so that I can recreate the site elsewhere, I will need to edit the html to remove all their invasive giffs and links etc, but that shouldnt be too much of a problem with a good WYSIWYG editor, problem is I don't have one LOL!!

I have a brand new pc, I spent all of my budget on hardware, so I have only the basic software, I don't have word or office for example, nor front page. I've been told I can create a website just using notepad, but since my coding is verrrrrrrrry basic I think thats a little too advanced for me.

My other problem is that I'm on a dial up connection, so if I were to buy a web design programme, I would need to be able to just upload a few pages at a time till the whole sites built since it's graphics intense and I don't think my 2 hour online limit would allow me to get the whole thing up in one go with all the graphics.

How do I get around these problems, are there any decent web design progs out there freeware or shareware that you can recommend?

Can ftp be set to just upload changes to pages rather than the whole page or site in one go...I'm thinking specifically if I make a new page and wanted to include links to it on existing pages would it just change the existing page to show the link or would it replace the entire page and re-upload all the graphics again?

Apologise in advance for the noviciyness of these questions.

Hi Rowena,

I use notepad for editing and Dreamweaver for my initial design work.  I think you can download a trial of Dreaweaver, though I'm not really sure.

Regarding FTP, you can upload a new site or edited pages this way.

If you go here you will find some tutorials and links to FTP programs.

Have you considered reducing the size or resolution of your graphics so that it wouldn't take so long to upload your files?

The guys in our graphics forum could assist you with this.

On your ftp question:

You can do something like "edit" in most ftp programs.
If you do a change on an html page, only the html page that you made will be changed and reuploaded. Nothing else will (graphics or external coding)

On graphics and HTML design:
You probably don't have access to photoshop or paint shop or anything fancy...So what i would do is try to look up through those design magazines and coding magazines at your local bookstore..(something like Computer Arts which is sold worldwide... or other less recommendable mags in europe..Razz) that will most likely have demos of WYSIWG HTML editors..or graphics programs.

I know of a couple jpg/gif file reducer programs that are very low in size (about 3 or 4 megs) that will help you reduce the size of your graphics without much details loss.

If you can't do that..gimme a link for your msn graphics..I'll see what I can do in regards to compressing them Smile

I would suggest getting Dreamweaver's Evaluatin edition and trying it out.  It's an excellent WYSIWYG program, and has handy features for web design.  You can get it at http://www.macromedia.com

There's a bit of a lerning curve, but it's not bad.  It's only because it has so many features.

::points above:: she's only got like two hours of online time though Razz, it might be hard to download over 10 megs with that

You can get programs that can resume a download if you have been cut off.

Searching for "download manager" in google.com comes up with a lot of them.

Yes, but still it is a large file, and on a 56 at 2 hours at a time, ti may take a while.  But it could be worth it Wink

If you do get it, definitely use a program to resume of the type Stephan mentions.

There are some free smaller WYSIWYG HTML editors out there, Web Dwarf, ACE, Arachnophilia (? phobia?), and something that is a little more complex is 1rst page-from Eversoft, Not Front Page. There is a Front Page lite for free also. I think I've used them all and currently using Dreamweaver, which seemed the best for my applications.

Even tho your on 56k, why not download a programe like CuteFtp off of download.com? you could upload your site bit by bit because you can do resumes with it. And yeah Autarkis is right, stay away from frontpage. I use dreamweaver and notepad myself, and even tho dreamweaver looks complicated when you first open it, its not actually that hard to get the hang of.
