I'll be in need of a forum at a later date, and I understand when I create the forum it will create the database. I also understand that I can add tables to the database so that I can use the DB for other solutions. My questions are:
1. how much space is allocated (or used) by the Forum BB
2. can I infact use the database for other solutions, like my opt-in list and other data?

The amount of space the database will use depends on what's in it.  The database will grow as posts are made to the forum.  A small-to-medium sized forum database can run several megabytes.

You can add tables to the database for other uses, as long as the names remain unque.

TWebMan, the space allocation I wondered about was displacement by the BB itself, not the DB. Is the BB a script?, therefore not requiring any space allocated? or is the BB a software installed with supporting files? (which would require allocated space)

bit twiddler, phpbb is a script.

It in installed somewhere in your public_html directory, in a subdirectory. It takes up around 1.5Mb

The mySQL database takes up quite a bit of space, depending how many messages it has to store. It only stores the messages, not the script.

Sounds like the bb itself requires little allocation. That's what I was looking for. Thanks guys, you're all very helpful as usual.

Yeah, it doesn't take up much space, but it takes a little bit.
