Im sure there should be a program that that does a mass redirect thing that you're talking about (i know its batch softwares are common for images. I dont know about files. But you should be able to find one if you looked )

But i personnaly prefer having multimedia files in public_html/images (or /movies ... ) and html files in their own folders which are in turn classed within their own directory.
It all makes for a very clean server that anyone can take a look at it and know exactly how you worked (which is a lot better if somewhere down the road someone helps you which the maintenance)

It's generally a matter of personal preference.  If the site is small and doesn't change much, putting everything together keeps things easy to see.

If the site is large, things can get cluttered pretty quickly.  I generally have a images/ folder for pics, a js/ folder for javascript includes, and css/ for style sheets.  I find it keeps the root web directory clean, and easy to find the pages.

As for moving things and having them automatically update the location, several HTML editors will do this for you.  I know that Macromedia's Dreamweaver will ask you if you want to find all the pages that use that file and update them for you.  But to do this, you have to move the files using Dreamweaver.

Hi,

I keep html files and image files in sperate directories.

It start getting confusing if you have them all in one folder.

To link to images from another directory,

you would do this <img src="images/image.jpg">

or <img src="../images/image.jpg">

Yes I agree.
If you keep all your images in one file, then it's easy to find them.
You can also use sublfolders for example:
/images/flash
/images/friends
etc.
As Autarkis said it makes for a much tidier server Razz
