How do I set the little icon that appears in the address box in visitor's browsers?  You know the little tiny one next to the URL that usually looks like a page or something similar, but for some sites comes up as something different?

Here's an example site with one:  http://www.drive-ins.com/showing.php?code=ohsund

(OK, it shows up in Mozilla & Netscape 7, but not IE.)

Hi,

You make an icon file, and call it "favicon.ico"

Put it in your public_html directory, and it will appear when someone bookmarks your site.

What size should the icon be?

It looks like it should be 16x16.  I think.  And thanks, stephan.

Interestingly, I put the icon file up, and using Mozilla Firebird, I see the icon when I go to www.mittenartworks.com, but not when I go to mittenartworks.com .  IE 6 behaves the same way.  Works in Navigator either with or without www, however.   Any clues on this?

I have IE5 and it doesn't show in the tool bar, but when I save it to "favorites" it appears there.....

You can put this code into your head and load any icon you like;

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/icon_name.ico">

where "/icon_name.ico" is any ico or gif

  gifs work too but they must be small.
