Anybody else interested in seeing a streaming media server implemented here?

You can stream over http with no problems and good performance.

Have you tried that yet?

I'm thinking of continuous streaming audio and/or video on demand. I believe media servers handle that better, especially with larger or multiple files going to clients with greatly varying connection speeds.

But if you know how to boost performance through a web server to a client player, please tell me! Any advice is welcome!

Yes, the special servers you can get don't use the http protocol.

They use their own protocols that are more efficient for streaming video/audio.

http still does work very well, I listen to the radio on my pc over the internet using an http stream and it works perfectly.

Are the problems you are having due to your ISP perhaps?

Thanks for trying to help, Stephan.  I'm not really having any problems as a user.  I'm just trying to accomodate other people.

The websites on which I work focus on music and musicians.  People come to listen, so sound is assumed.  Some bands want an entire song... or worse, a mega-meg video... posted for play on demand.   "[Roll   That's a download disaster  via http;  and without a high speed connection, even the small files clip.

SO, what I really want is for everybody in the world to have a high speed connection....  (ha!)

But then there's reality.  Hence my  hoping/wondering about the feasibility of a streaming server here at Lunarpages. But if it's not in their game plan right now, that's ok too. I don't want the streamer as much as I want my host of choice.

And again I will be delighted if you have any suggestions.

I have an ADSL connection, it's 512k per second apparently.

I can get 60k per second on it maximum.

I have put some mp3's on my lunarpages account and I can listen to them through windows media player with no problems, it streams perfectly.

I think it just depends on your connection.

You could try encoding very low quality mp3s for low bandwidth users, that could work quite well.
