First of all, AFAIK, HTML 5 is not even finished yet, and is subject to considerable change. So there's no point in trying to adopt it yet as a standard. It appears to me that XHTML is the way to go for now, and HTML 5 will be an outgrowth of that. Hopefully it will be a pure superset rather than an incompatible version, so anything you do now in XHTML should still be good to build on, if you want to start using HTML 5 features in the future.

If you can code to 'strict' (using CSS for more of the presentation styling than is done with HTML), you should be in a good position for future (X)HTML standards. Coding to older versions, such as HTML 4.01 or even XHTML Transitional, can leave you stuck if you want to use advanced XHTML or HTML 5 features in the future. I'm assuming when I say this that HTML 5's new features, once finalized, will show up soon after in XHTML 1.x or 2.x, so you won't be missing anything.

When I write from scratch, I use XHTML 1.0 Strict as Mr. Phil recommends. I wouldn't waste too much time converting working sites to it though.

Thanks,

I have done my site in xhtml strict. I did convert the existing (working) site to it but it was while I was doing other significant things and had to "touch" each page anyway.  Just was worried that I had done a lot of work that was possibly going to have to be redone in the future. You two have reassured me that it is ok.

Thanks,
