Hi,
I am new to lunarpages and am having trouble uploading using WSFTP Pro. I use a program called Web Studio to build my website and it creates an html file and a folder containing the graphics (mostly jpeg photos in my case) for each page. I can upload the html files but when I try to upload the folders I get the following error message in the WSFTP activity window.
MKD testgallery
550 testgallery: forbidden file name
CWD testgallery
550 testgallery: no such file or directory

I have no idea what is happening here. I'm green at all this as I have only ever had 1 site up with the 1 host. Details that may help are:
I am signed up for a free account.
Page names are all in lower case eg:testgallery, k1, k2 etc.
The largest folder is 90 kb.
The images inside the folders are numbered (by Web Studio) IMAG0000 in upper case.
I am uploading into a blank site. When I first connected to my site it showed a file called index.html. When I could not upload I deleted the index.html file and tried again without success. Please help as I am stumped.
     My account name is   bobd
     My login is          ***********
Sorry about the long post.

This is a public message board, everyone can read this.

You posted your password above, I have edited your post to take it out.

I'd recommend you to change your password immediately.

p.s. if you posted your password on purpose so we could help, don't worry because the administrators don't need to know it anyway. They can find it out.

Please make any file folders through your site manager while we figure out this problem.

Good catch Stephan

Just a fyi to everyone, admins never need to ask for a pw. All they usually need is your username, for hosting accounts, for emails, etc. So never ever give out your pw coz there is no need to.

......... Unless they ask you for it of course

PS. Oh btw, welcome to Lunarpages!

Just to clarify things, we won't *EVER* ask you for your password.  We do have access to all of your account information.  Just your username for logging on to your account is fine.

Hi,

I'm assuming you're still trying to upload via FTP. Make sure you're trying to upload using ftp1.lunarpages.com

If FTP fails, post here again so that the admins can check your account to see what's wrong and use the browser upload function which you can access at http://65.204.170.131/cgi-bin/manager.cgi

Hope that helps

Hi,
I am having no trouble connecting to my site and have now created a directory and put my little test site into it-but it still wont upload the graphics folders. The html files are there and the site works-but no graphics at all.
I tried uploading the graphics folders with the browser upload but the browse function wouldn't allow me to select a folder, only the first image inside it. This is no good as the html page code calls for the folder to get the graphics and can't find it.
I've run out of ideas here and need help.

That's right. With the browser upload, you'll need to specify the files you wish to upload.

First, go into the Base Directory and create a new directory eg. images(if that's where all your images are) using the Create New button under "Create a new folder in the current directory".
Next, under "Select a directory:", enter the 'images' folder and hit the Jump to selected dir. button. That should load your new 'images' directory.
Once you're in the new images directory, you should see "File uploads -- Upload files from your hard drive to current directory". Proceed to upload the image files or if you have more than 5 files to upload, you may click on the "[ show ten uploads fields ]" link.

If your pages in your Base Directory has the correct references to call on the images in your 'images' directory, eg.
code
Quote
 <img src="images/yourpic.gif">
it should work fine.

Hope that helps!

I don't know if this will help you... but from the way it sounds, it seems like you just need to know that you can't upload actual folders... well, at least you can't just double click on a folder and expect the whole folder to upload by itself. If you need to have a folder in your site directory thats identical to the one on your hard drive, instead of trying to upload the actual folder, just create a new folder in your web site directory with the exact same name as the one on your hard drive. Then, upload all of the pictures/files inside of the folder on your hard drive into the new folder you've created in your site directory. Sorry if I sound too confusing, lol... hope it helps.

Thanks for your replies. You hit it on the head Julie. My graphics need to be in folders (it's the way Web Studio works).
I don't understand why I can't upload folders via ftp. My site is currently hosted by Virtualave and I have never had this problem there. If uploading folders via ftp is barred here I would appreciate confirmation as I will have to look elsewhere. This would be a pity as this site had a good feel to it and I wanted to upgrade if it all worked well. My website is over 250 pages now, which means 250 plus folders, more than 30 of them are indexes with around 15 graphics files in each. Not really viable a folder at a time.

Uploading folders by FTP is not barred!

Use bulletproof ftp to do it, just drag the folders across. http://www.bpftp.com

Before everyone says "oh, no, use cuteftp, or use this and that" , yes, I know that there is other software available...

So, just drag all the folders to where you want them, then click on go. The folders will automatically be created and the files will go inside them.

I'm not sure if I understand what this problem is about by the way, I hope this helps you.

Oh yeah, by the way, in your original post, you wrote:

MKD testgallery
550 testgallery: forbidden file name
CWD testgallery
550 testgallery: no such file or directory

That means there is a problem with your account. Nothing has been barred, it's just not working propery. Maybe you should e-mail Max and tell him that you can't create folders. His e-mail is info@lunarpages.com . Make sure you give your account name.

The problem seems to be that certain ftp dameon create directories just like they create files and therefore basic accounts (which can not have most file types) can not create directories.  Hopefully the ftp dameon developer will have a fix for this soon.

Update:

With a little extra coding, I have altered the ftp settigns to allow for directories.  All users should be able to create a directory with no problems.  If you can not, please tell me your account name and what error you get when trying to make a new directory.

Thanks
