Can subdomains accomplish this?

I want to set up some "users" of the web site. If I created subdomains for mykid1.mysite.com and mykid2.mysite.com, would they each be able to ftp their web content separately with separate passwords, and not have access to the each other's area?

or

Let's say I have www.mycompany.com at LunarPages and I want to create patches.mycompany.com so that only customers that I give an ID and Password to can download files via FTP from it.

Thanks,  "[wink]"

Yes you can do that with subdomains.  Just set up an ftp account with the name of the subdomain.

For mykid1.yourdomain.com it would be:
FTP user: mykid1@yourdomain.com
passsword: you set
host: ftp.mykid1.yourdomain.com (or just the subdomain name without the "ftp.".

Best thing is to make a directory inside your public_html named the same as the sub (mykid1).  Then create your subdomain, give it a minute, then create your ftp account.

As for acces, you can click on 'web protect' in the CPanel, and drill down the directory you want authorized access to (for http).  Just follow the directions.

Does each subdomain automatically get its own unique FTP account, or do you have to buy FTP accounts to associate with the subdomain?

You have to buy ftp accounts to go with the subdomains.

(unless you have the premium plan which already includes some extra ftp usernames)

5 additional ftp accounts costs $1.95/month

Premium plans are allowed 25 ftp accounts.  Standard plans are allowed one.  You can add ftp accounts to your standard plan at the rate of $1.95 per month for five accounts.
