To combat the problem of raw logs being deleted and Webalizer not reflecting the raw data, Lunar Pages has set up a cronjob for my accounts.  Every night, they compress my raw logs, move the file to the "logfiles" directory, and restart the raw logs.  Then I can download (and delete the server copy of) the compressed file, uncompress, and analyze.

This has been working fine for a couple weeks now, with no further loss of data.  Contact "Max" if you want this set up for your own stats.

Hope that helps somebody.

not that i get enough traffic to need this setup, but i'd like to see/try the script used to run this type of job.

only if its convenient sometime, Max, to satisfy my curiosity...

thanks

I don't think you should request this cronjob unless you're sure you want this done, because the resulting log-file process will not necessarily mesh with Webalizer.  Also, you will want to obtain a log analysis tool before beginning this process, so you will know what to do with the raw logs.  Note also that, if you do not download the compressed log file, the next day's compressed file will overwrite the previous file.

In other words, for those of us who need this info and are willing to go to the extra trouble, it can be great.  But if you have little traffic or are only mildly curious, I would not recommend requesting this process.

Just my two cents....

True, but so is learning from the experience of others.  I just didn't want to give the wrong impression, leaving you to be unpleasantly surprised if this process turned out to be something that you later discovered you really hadn't wanted.  Rolling Eyes

It's been a learning experience for us, and we've been quite pleased with the results.  But this is a decision that each would need to make on his own, and is not, in my opinion, something that should be casually implemented.  It seemed only proper to provide a thorough presentation of the issues.

My apologies for any unintentional offense.
