What download speed (in KB/sec) can visitors to my website (if I move it to Lunarpages) expect?

I encode home videos at 256kbps and they range in file size from 5mb to 25mb.  Would any of the restrictions or limitations at Lunarpages prevent storage and STREAMING of the video content to broadband viewers?

Thanks in advance

I don't know what speeds you would get, because I only have a 56k modem!

However, I know that the network lunarpages is on is very fast. There was an upgrade not too long ago.

It is certainly fast enough to stream videos from.

You are allowed to stream videos, but remember, on a standard plan you get 20Gb of transfer. You could get the plan up from that, which gives you 60Gb (these are per month).

Extra bandwidth is available if you need it, although I think 20Gb is a lot and 60 is definately enough!

Just to add on to this:

Download speeds depend on what kind of file you are downloading,

For example, a text file will download much faster than a highly compressed zip file.

This is because some compression is done in your modem.

So, although people may post what speeds they personally are getting, it doesn't mean a lot, in some cases.

In one test from a 100mbit connection to our 100mbit connection the transfer of a zipped file was 900kb per sec.  That should give you something to work on.  It does depend on the type of connection that the person who is downloading/streaming from has.  For example a cable connection is a shared bandwith and depends on weather the isp has over sold their connections and the number of currently connected users.  ADSL/DSL is dedicated bandwith.

hi Tdoglovin,

a while back when the new server was installed, there was a thread in the moderators forum where we all posted our transfer times. they varied greatly, obviously because of different locations isp etc. the highest one as i recall was in the 700kb range, and the slowest was around 5-6kb on a dial connection somewhere in sweden. overall everybody thought the downloads times where good and at least equal to the norm when comparing it to other things they've downloaded from other servers.

overall i think you'll be fine. i'd just worry about the transfer per month as videos can really eat up bandwidth.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought he was wanting to know the download speed in KBs/Sec  (kilobytes).

700 kb/sec (kilobits) would equal 87.5 KBs/Sec    (kilobytes), and somewhere there was a mention of 900 kb/sec, which would equal to 112.5 KBs/Sec.

We where not talking in kilobit. We where talking in kilobytes.

So the numbers where correct as they where. whoisthis you are the only one confused in here  "[Smile]"

I usually get 900 - 1000 Kbyte/s, thats about 10 Mbit.

Our total connection is a 100Mbit, wich equals to about 10 MegaBytes per second.

At this moment we use only about 5 % of our full connection at all times. So there is plenty of room for growth.

SOLD.

I am on a 1.5Mbit connection here at my house and I will be able to take advantage and test it out.  I will be ordering my space in 2hrs.

Thanks for the ample feedback.

Apparently I was, Max, but it wasn't the first time, and I doubt it will be the last...lol

I didn't see the 100 mbit connection you posted, which, unless I'm confused again, is about 12.5 MBs/sec.

I've seen quite a few people that have a basic cable connection that do a broadband connection test, and the results are in kilobits, so when they see 700 kbs, they think they're capable of download speeds of 700 Kilobytes per sec, when they are actually only capable of around 87 kilobytes/sec.

On dial-up, it shows my speed at 45kb/sec, which means I can expect a download speed somewhere in the neighborhood of 5.0 to 5.6 kilobytes per sec, depending on several factors.. ie, server I'm d\l from... etc.

8 bits per byte.
