I have read that the wordpress default theme is changing sometime pretty soon. I use the old default theme and have made a few changes.  I would like to continue to use what I have.  I'm assuming the new theme will be named default.  So how do I keep my old modified default theme and not have it overwritten?

When you install a new theme in WordPress, it should have it's own folder under the /wp-content/themes/ directory.  You might just make sure you don't over write the data you have in there (put the new theme in the new folder) or download the current theme folder (to back it up) and you should be all set.
