I've been a user of SmartFTP for years as my FTP program of choice, however over the past several months the author has decided to remove the free option and also bungled some of the functionality that made it appealing. Left without the FTP program I've used for years I feel like someone stole my trusty old wrench from my toolbox and I'm left looking for a replacement. I've tried a few free alternatives like Filezilla and WinSCP and while they get the job done, they are a bit rough around the edges. So I'm left to wonder what FTP programs do you all use and what can you recommend? I'm not against paying for a good FTP program but if I can avoid it, all the better.
Oh and this is just my opinion but avoid SmartFTP at all costs.

I used to use WS_FTP Pro, which was a freebie on a UK magazine cover disc. Just lately though I`ve been using FireFTP, which is a Firefox add-on and a brilliant one at that.

Like Mitch, I'm a fan of FileZilla myself. For a free client, it does what it's supposed to do. Other than that, I manage all my sites in Dreamweaver and use its built-in FTP, but still use FileZilla if I need to upload / download something fast.

In my opinion, it might not be the prettiest girl at the dance, but it is the best at getting the job done LOL, Mitch that may be the best description for Filezilla that I've ever read. I have to say that the look of Filezilla is one factor in keeping me from accepting it wholesale. I'll have to dl the latest version and give it another spin. I've used FireFTP from time to time and while I've found it to be a handy utility and a good Firefox add-on, I don't think it could fill the shoes of a dedicated, stand-alone FTP client. |

I'd go for FlashFXP or CuteFTP. FlashFXP is the best in my opinion. The only disadvantage it has is that you cant upload multiple files simultaneosly. But anyway great app.
PS. CuteFTP has this feature.

I myself generally recommend filezilla for those who are just looking for an FTP upload solution.
If looking for something where you can code in code view / WYSIWYG / and FTP use, then I recommend dreamweaver ( well worth the cost).

I use to use smart ftp as well; that is, until I gave filezilla a shot. Its really a better program. Dreamweaver rocks  |

Well I've pretty much converted from SmartFTP to Filezilla. It does almost everything I need it to and what it doesn't do I use WinSCP for.

Well- it probably doesn't apply  , but Konqueror (KDE Desktop, Linux) is so easy for FTP work that it isn't funny. Usually I split the view right and left, open the ftp link I have bookmarked, and it's pretty much just like working with local files. For heavy duty web stuff (ignoring Dreamweaver), I cannot imagine anything being easier and better than Linux on a desktop . If I were to spring for SSH access- I could use fish:// which makes it exactly like dealing with local files. |
