What do y'all think about inserting Meta descriptions (and key words if you use them) to every page of your site?

I'm thinking that since my index page is the most important page - the one I want folks to see first and then explore the rest of the site after - that I should forgo the meta tags on the other pages and instruct the robots to only follow the index page.

Does that seem like a good idea, or is it a no-no?

I think it is a very good idea, some search engines don't pay as much attention to them as they used to (such as Google) but others still do.  As long as your not stuffing keywords in there just for the sake of adding them, should help you out in the long run for sure.

So, write a good description - add applicable key words and instruct the robots to only follow the index page; no-index, no-follow the other pages?

Yes, meta tags and descriptions would be good for the regular pages.  Here is a great article on how to get that done:

For more on lending the robots and spiders a helping hand, I think you may want to look into adding a robots.txt file into the main directory for your domain.  An example of this would be the "public_html" folder for your primary domain via the Basic and Business accounts.  You can learn more about the robots.txt file here:

Hope that helps get you started at least. Smile

The robot instructions will definitely be needed because I have one of my sites with no meta tags on any of the pages including the index page & it still gets picked up by SE's - top results too for multiple search terms, so just ommitting the tags wont keep them away from your other pages.

I also think it's a pretty good idea. I'm also thinking of applying the same principle at work for a governmental website in Canada (Transport Canada). I'll read the posts.

I still insert them, and it works.  If you have time, might as well.

I was under the impression that if you stuffed a bunch of meta tags on a page that didn't have content relating to the tags, search engines wouldn't like it.

IMO I think it's worth it you want a specific page indexed for a certain recent and only if it has really good content however if all your pages are the same then I wouldn't bother personally.

Yeah, if you do them - make sure you keep this list around 10 or less, and really be careful they are related to the content that is on the page.  For example, if you have a page about fishing, and you stick keywords in there like "paris hilton" wanting to get some cheap traffic, the search engines will take you out behind the proverbial wood shed for that one.

I would be concerned about doing this. You'll hurt yourself if you "stuff" your <meta> keyword and description tags with stuff that isn't on your Home Page. The big question is, does your Home Page "naturally" include all the keywords from the rest of your site, so Google just looking at the text on that page will index it with all the desired keywords? If not, and there are keywords on other pages that aren't being indexed and aren't on the Home Page, I think you'll miss out on those visitors.

What exactly is the purpose of not  having visitors being able to directly go (via a search engine) to your interior pages? Your navigation system should be set up so that visitors can easily jump to other pages no matter where they enter your site. Not necessarily directly to any other page, but at least to "header" pages of major sections. That way, you don't have to "force" anything in the way of keywords, and risk Google penalizing you for having irrelevant keywords on your Home Page, or risk having Microhoo fail to pick up your Home Page on desired keywords because you had to cut back to avoid offending Google.
