I am currently researching how to publish my own RSS feeds. I have found some great information but I still have a question regarding how other webmasters handle publishing.

In Heaven Here's the best tutorial I found on doing your own RSS:
http://www.webreference.com/xml/column13/

My questions:
Do you hand-code your own .xml feed pages, or do you let a "tool" scrape your site for you?

Is there an addon for Dreamweaver that will give a dialog box for entering a new feed-item's title and link and description tags, then add them automatically to my xml feed?

And if I don't have full-fledged news stories to release, but instead just one or two sentence news bits, should I make a permalink for each one or put them all on the same html page with anchors?

Easiest way would be to use a script or service that outputs an RSS feed automatically.  Something like WordPress should do the trick.

For a good Windows solution (to handcode your own RSS feeds from scratch), I would suggest FeedforAll.  It isn't free, but it makes creating your own RSS feeds pretty simple.  RSS Builder is a free solution that I rand across the other day - haven't had a chance to use it though, so can't testify for how good or bad it is.

I'll keep my eyes out though, and see if I can find some more suggestions for you.

I process both Wordpress and SMF using a customized PHP script for creating sidebars on my site, I cache the results to save CPU cycles. This cab be very powerful especially with SMF where you can RSS at board level.

All of yesterday afternoon, I tried posting a reply from my PC, on both FF2 and IE7. I recieved 404 errors upon hitting the "post" button, as well as "you are not authorized" error, even after logging out and logging in. I still cannot post a reply on the PC, so I switched to the mac, safari2.

Hmm, very odd - could you browse around without any issues?  There haven't been any errors or updates on the forums recently so not sure what might have caused that.

I got locked out again on the mac during my third try. I already opened a support ticket. Thanks for the replies. I'll look into the php script and maybe python.

just testing now. I'm on the PC, which locked me out earlier this morning. This is my second post, then I'll see if the third post won't let me make a post.

maybe it's the copy/paste in a quick reply. I just got locked out on my third post, using paste.

Yep, that seems to be the problem. I cannot make a post when I paste from the clipboard into either the quick reply, or using the reply button, or to pm a moderator.

Hiya What about you, Mitch? can you paste a message in and post it? Try this: Write something in the quick reply. Control-x to copy and erase it. Then paste it back into the quick reply. Click post.

ghgfjfjf. Okay maybe not. I just posted that gibberish using control-x and control-v. Never mind. I'm spending too much time on this Hypno
Now I have to switch gears and really spend time learning how to automate the publishing of an rss feed. I think wordpress may be the simplest answer. Can I use my current site template inside wordpress so no-one knows it is wordpress?

Hello, well - WordPress kind of had it's own template system in place for skinning the look of your Web site.  You might take a look at some of the downloadable themes out there as well.  Here is one good resource:

For anyone reading, here is my solution to RSS feeds.

I used the control panel>fantastico to install WordPress into a folder named "Blog". Do not install it into the root directory unless your main site IS a blog.

I picked out a theme and modified the heck out of it to make it look as similar to my site as possible.

I read about Feedburner and for now, decided against it because it takes the url of my feed and serves it from Feedburner's servers, unless you pay for the pro account. Since I want the feed itself hosted at my site, I decided to try adding Google analytics tracking code to it.

Here are the instructions, which were hard to find, on how to install google analytics code on a static php site like a wordpress blog.
http://www.google.com/support/analytics/bin/static.py?page=troubleshooter.cs&problem=tracking&selected=tracking_php&ctx=tracking__

I don't think this option will tell me how many subscribers I have, though. Feedburner will tell you how many subscribers there are. Depending on how this works out, I just may switch the rss feed to feedburner.
