My Lunarpages account was shutdown at my request but when I look up the domain name on a whois site the domain name is still registered to me.

Why?

If you had your account shutdown, you still technically "own" the domain until its expiration date (and you may receive emails when it gets near expiration) as domain registrations cant be "shut down".

Once the domain completely expires (after it goes through redemption period too) then it will be available for anyone to register.
