I've had problems lately with my website that's being hosted by a large nationally known hosting firm.  I'll go down and I won't
know about it until it's too late and I've lost sales.  I found this cool service at www.areweonline.com that checks to see if I'm
up every 5 minutes.  They have good reporting as well.

Nice tool, but its not really any good unless it tests from multiple ISP's, locations, etc. As there are "terminals" in between you and a website that can go down, -- meaning your website is up, but there is a connection problem between you and the server(and other ISP users can access it).

EDIT: and there server just went down lol, trace route show its reaching them, so its the server and not a connection drop from me to them. <_<  Very good for a site that wants to sell you something to check on the reliability of your hosting........
