Hopefully this forum will be of more help than what I have received from support@lunarpages.com...

I have a NON-lunarpages domain. Let's call it: www.nonlp.com
This domain has a non lunarpages DNS let's call it: ns.nonlpDNS.com

I also have a lunarpages domain. Let's call it: www.mylp.com
And it uses lunarbreeze as its DNS: ns1.lunarbreeze.com & ns2.lunarbreeze.com

I can NOT want to move my DNS to lunarbreeze for nonlp.com because of corporate stuff.

I have a website at new.mylp.com that I want to be accessible via new.nonlp.com

i.e.
http://new.nonlp.com/index.php ==> http://new.mylp.com/index.php
http://new.nonlp.com/images/foo.png ==> http://new.mylp.com/images/foo.png

It seems a CNAME record for new.nonlp.com in ns.nonlpDNS.com to new.mylp.com should make this happen.

However, when I do that, going to http://new.nonlp.com redirects my browser to http://www.lunarpages.com (yes, in the address bar)

Would someone please tell me what I need to do or what I am doing wrong?

Thank you so much!

Interesting situation - check out this thread in the mean time, while I try to wrap my head around this, it isn't exactly what you are doing, but it might help:

Did you setup the subdomain in your control panel?  If it doesn't exist there, then the apache config won't know about it and that could cause the round trip back to lunarpages.com.  Also, do you have a ticket number I could check out?  Might help to see what you were told before, and to break free some from the hypothetical domains.  Very Happy

Wow. This suggested reading (even though it isn't exactly what I am doing) fixed it!   Doh
Sorry to say, Mitch, but now that I know this little trick, I am pulling my DNS hosting from Lunar Pages (you aren't very good at uptime anyway)!
This new found information will make my job administrating this crap so much easier!
Especially now that I can do it myself without having to go through support (you really need to get that changed)!!!  Soooo Cool

Solution:

  • I added new.nonlp.com to my "Add-on domain list"
  • At ns.nonlpDNS.com, I added an A record for new.nonlp.com to my LP server IP Address. Haha

Voila! Presto Chango!!!

No, it's not at new.mylp.com, but that'll do, pig, that'll do!!! I am so excited at getting this little nugget working!
 Bouncin for Joy
I can use my non-Lunarpages DNS to make DNS changes!!!! YAY!
 Happy Happy Joy Joy

Mitch, I could hug you right now!
 hug me

THANK YOU!

ps That is more smiley's than I've ever used on the Internet, ever, total.

To clarify, where are you talking about adding the subdomain?  It case I want to make this happen in the future the way I have described?  Here is my ticket #1605105.

Mitch,

The more I think about the awesomeness of this information, the more I think you should be putting this in bold and big letters somewhere on the "sanctioned" information pages for Lunarpages. lol
Non-A-MX-CNAME-people like me would never in a million years think to do this.

Always happy to help.  Thumbs Up  Let me see what I can do to get some of this information up on the wiki in tutorial form.
