Command shell results in su: incorrect password
« on: March 11, 2007, 08:18:07 PM »
I recently upgraded glibc on my server cause some apps were wanting version 2.4 instead of version 2.2 that was on my server. The update went fairly smooth however, when i go to the command shell in webmin and try and execute anything or do anything it results in:
Quote
su: incorrect password

I've browsed around the net and tried disabling PAM access in webmin so it only looks up the shadow file however that did nothing.

I'm not sure if glibc upgrade caused this problem or if it was a problem before and the uograde just made it come out in the open. The terminals bundled with webmin wouldn't allow me to login to root for some odd reason (no error message given) so I suspect it was an issue before and just  became more of a problem after this upgrade.

Any help or insight would be appreciated :)

Hi Ryan,

What exact command do you run in the command shell in webmin? Are you logged as non-privileged user when you are doing that?

It can be any command (except some common ones such as cd and a few others). Commands such as ls, updatedb or even trying to run the configure file to install an app brings up that error. I'm logged in as root on webmin.

Are you able to login as root via ssh? Or to su to root if direct root login via ssh is disabled?

Yep, it works fine if I do it via SSH. It only does it if I do it via Webmin :-\

I just tried uninstalling webmin and then reinstalling it (so that it would have fresh settings and all) and got the same results.

Hello,

Well, the only thing I can advise in such situation is to ask for help in Webmin community. I'm really sorry  :?

No worries. I'll ask there and see if a solution comes up.
